Passat 3C problem with DSP / radio

My Passat 3C Variant has the following error entry in the CAN gateway:


00463 - Control unit for the digital sound package (J525).
004 - No signal/communication - Intermittent.

The sound from the radio or CD player keeps cutting out, sometimes to the point where there is no sound at all.
There is no fault in the navigation system or radio.

Another question just occurred to me.
- Why is there a Nokia hands-free module under the passenger seat, but no telephone option in the navigation system? Is it possible to complete and make it functional relatively easily?

Try to figure out which speakers are affected by the issue, specifically all of them: left (L), right (R), center (C), and surround (VR, etc.). To do this, simply adjust the balance control in the sound settings to only output audio to the left (L), center (C), and right (R) speakers.
If only certain channels are affected by the issue, that would significantly narrow down the scope of troubleshooting.

So, the first error mentioned above was present when I noticed the problem.
After that, I deleted everything, spent a day troubleshooting, the problem was still there, and then I ran an Autoscan.

The "glitch" affects all speakers, and the sound completely disappears.

Are you saying that the only issue you had was with the STG 19, which is the gateway?

Even the fault memory of control unit 47 (sound system) shows no error codes in the vehicle scan. Or has it just been cleared?

Since they are all failing at the same time, it's probably not due to the power supply lines. That leaves the CAN bus, the voltage supply, or a problem with the radio itself.

Do you know anyone with whom you could exchange the radio? Or perhaps someone who has an amplifier of the exact same model?

Otherwise, I would carefully measure the power supply voltage (including ground).

BTW.

There's no "DSP" here!

(1) DSP is actually an abbreviation for Digital Signal Processing.
(2) You have the old analog amplifier.
(3) Even the Digital 10-channel processor from the Dynaudio system doesn't do what one usually expects from a DSP: it doesn't create spatial sound effects like those found in Audi systems.

Otherwise: As others have said, check the wiring with a multimeter.

- Nowadays, the sound sometimes just stops working for days if it feels like it.

To be honest, I haven't gotten around to measuring it yet.
But as described, this is indeed very strange behavior.
So, not a wobble, but something else entirely.

Sometimes the sound cuts out for 1-2 days, then it suddenly works again, and when you turn up the volume, it disappears again... it's all very strange.

Is the navigation/radio system I have an MFD2, correct?

I'm going to order this installation tool and see if everything is properly connected.

Yes, you have the RNS MFD2 DVD system. It was installed until around 10/2007. I don't know exactly when it stopped being included, but yours is definitely the later version with the silver buttons on top.

You can try installing virtually any radio that was available in the Passat 3C. It might be a cheaper option (perhaps on eBay) than ordering a new navigation system for €2,500 directly from Volkswagen without knowing if it will work }.

You don't need any special tools to remove it. A ratchet with a 10mm socket will suffice. To detach the plastic trim around the radio, pull firmly on the lower edge (access the area below the "Passenger Airbag Off" indicator and pull decisively).
