@Julian: The fact that the TDIs don't sound as bad as tractors when starting cold is probably more due to better sound insulation. In any case, the old Mercedes swirl chamber diesel engines are at least just as quiet (if you open the hood).
It makes sense, especially with the TDI engine, specifically the PD type, because all the fuel enters the combustion chamber relatively quickly – which naturally causes a characteristic combustion noise.

As far as I know, only BMW offered engines with swirl chamber technology.

Okay, let's get specific then.

Volkswagen and BMW have produced diesel engines with swirl chambers.
Mercedes-Benz always produced pre-chamber diesel engines (at least in the earlier W123/W124 models) because they considered direct injection diesel engines to be too uncivilized and noisy.


Previous Mercedes diesel engines (pre-chamber technology).
Approximately one-third of the compression chamber is formed by the pre-chamber. Fuel is injected into the pre-chamber via a nozzle, where it only partially combusts. The flame is then forced through channels into the main combustion chamber, resulting in a smooth combustion process. Glow plugs are required.

Vortex chamber method:
Air is almost completely displaced from the cylinder into the spherical swirl chamber through a tangential connection channel during compression, creating a strong vortex. Fuel is injected into this swirling air, and the burning fuel-air mixture flows into the main combustion chamber. This engine runs slightly harder than pre-chamber engines, and a glow plug is required.

Irgendwie ist das alles nocht so ganz das ware. Ich meine Leistung steigt, Lebensdauer nimmt ab. Da ich Beruflich (als KFZ.ler bei BMW) immer mehr an Diesel(traktoren) zu schrauben habe bin ich schon etwas stutzig geworden als in letzter zeit immer mehr mototschäden zu uns kamen. wenn da einer schon 20 tkm drauf hatte war das mal richtig viel!!!! den letzern hatte ich montag mit 1689 km das ist doch mal ne laufleistung würde ich sagen. icon_smile.gif I've noticed the following regarding this matter: It only applies to engines with a displacement of 2.5 liters or more, so anything above 150 horsepower.
Because increasingly higher pressures are being used in the fuel system, icon_cry.gif it naturally requires more from the pump. Of course, this doesn't quite work with a Bosch high-pressure pump made in the Czech Republic. icon_cry.gif In my opinion, the lubricating properties of the fuel at such high pressures, combined with extremely high engine speeds and very high fuel temperatures, are fatal for any pump!
I would set aside other issues like the electrical etching process for now. While it might not decrease, I wouldn't associate it with durability.

I worked as a driver for the Maltese Order's international relief service. The E 270 CDI van, with its modifications, had already gone through its third engine at approximately 270,000 kilometers (168,000 miles), and about 15 (!) mass airflow sensors had been replaced. This doesn't even mention other problems like transmission failures, suspension issues, etc.
Als Reservefahrzeug hatten wir einen 250D Automatik, 90 PS, Bj. 87. Mileage:
1,180,000 km! Original engine, original head gasket, original pump, original chain, original transmission. Usually driven at full throttle all the time, even when cold, and often on long distances. Current oil consumption is approximately 0.3 liters per 1,000 km. Runs perfectly fine...

I don't understand. Why are we still getting worked up about the timing belt then?

What are the most common causes of engine failures in BMW and DaimlerChrysler vehicles?
