Hi Daniel,
Then ask the people in the chain drive community (especially those with VW VR6, DC, and BMW engines) how great it is.
I know of many cases where the timing chain had to be replaced with mileage below 100,000 km, and only DC (presumably a car manufacturer) offered goodwill coverage for it. The repair costs I'm aware of were around 3000 DM or 1500 euros. I wouldn't mind spending two hours disassembling the front of the engine in that situation.
It's not that much better of a chain!
Looking at the failure rates of newer toothed belt drives (from 2001 onwards) compared to chain defects, the thought of using a chain makes me feel sick.
For over 30 years, Volkswagen has used timing belts without any major problems, and then they themselves contributed to the negative reputation surrounding them. Volkswagen criticized the timing belt because, in the early PD models, it was excessively stressed (operated far beyond its specifications). Those days are long gone. Other reputable manufacturers also use timing belts, but no one complains about that. Only when Volkswagen uses a timing belt is there significant criticism.
By the way, the Audi and the Passat are definitely cars that are a pain to maintain when it comes to the timing belt system; I have to admit that. Even with a chain, it wouldn't be much better. Gruß Bertil
