I'm having the exact same problem as you!
So far, the problem has only occurred very rarely, which hasn't bothered me too much.
But recently, it has been happening more and more often .
And on my way home today, I saw a very dense cloud of black smoke in the rearview mirror while the car was momentarily stalled.
It's time to do something.
A quick question: Can the NHG be replaced separately, or would I have to buy new ESDs? |
"I also rarely experience these issues. The car has been doing this since I've owned it (about 16 months, with approximately 190,000 km on the odometer)."
As far as I know, the NHG (presumably a sensor or component) is integrated into the fuel injector of the 3rd cylinder, so the entire injector needs to be replaced.
I'm not yet sure if the problem is actually related to the NHG (natural gas heating). When the NHG was disconnected (though only for a day), the jerking didn't occur, but it doesn't always happen normally anyway.

My 1Z had the same symptoms!
It only ran at 160 [units/speed/etc.] then.
The needle firing system has been replaced, and now it's working again like a Pershing II.
By the way, it's only available as a complete set with the nozzle.
but the exchange is really worth it | .
My top speed is probably correct. However, I'm currently still using winter tires, so I tend to ease off the accelerator when I reach 190 km/h (which is the maximum speed allowed for those tires). The car reaches 190 km/h relatively easily.
With the NHG (natural gas) system disabled, the car still reaches a speed of 170 km/h on the speedometer after a long period of acceleration (above 2500 rpm, the engine only runs very roughly).
But can NHG really be the cause of such severe dropouts?
What about relay 109? Mine is getting really hot, which doesn't seem normal to me.

There are definitely better ways to test that.

Yes, he can.
Regarding the mileage and the initial injector set, I would consider replacing them with a completely new set. Diesel injectors are wear items, and their spray pattern deteriorates with increasing mileage. Please use the search function; we've discussed this before.

The 109 model tends to get quite warm, which can often cause the solder joints inside to break. Open it up, inspect it, and if necessary, resolder the connections. Gruß Bertil

Hello Bertil.
I thank you for your help.
I'll perform the knock test on the NHG this weekend.
I will also check relay 109 and, if necessary, revise it.
I might get a replacement beforehand, though. I rely on the car, so I can't afford any downtime.
The tires are likely still the original ones (the previous owner purchased the car in August 2000 with 106,000 km and drove it to 190,000 km by January 2003).
Shouldn't worn nozzles potentially be detectable by observing changes in fuel consumption?
I usually get just under 6 liters per 100 kilometers in city traffic, and also when driving on the highway at 160 km/h. I really can't complain about that.
Regards,
Oliver.

No, but by the smell of the exhaust (no joke) and the sound of the engine.
Regarding the smell and the noise caused by faulty nozzles (please read the entire thread for more information), here are some additional details:

Hello,
So, I was just reading about your top speeds, and it seems mine isn't performing as well. It struggles to reach 160 km/h on a straight road, and only manages around 180 km/h going downhill, but it takes a while to get there. The NHG (presumably a component) is new, and since installing it, the jerking has stopped.
What could be the reason for it being so slow? The error memory only shows 'speed signal implausible' intermittently.
The LMM (likely referring to a mass airflow meter) was replaced in 2002.
It's a Passat, manufactured in November 1993, with a 1Z engine.

@Roadagain
Please use the search function. There are already enough threads running and being discussed about topics like performance loss and maximum speed, etc.

Hello again.
Okay, I've disassembled relay 109 and have it in front of me. The metal coil carrier, through which the current presumably flows (between contact 30 [ground] and 87 [where the 12V should be connected]), is still too hot to touch with bare fingers, even 5 minutes after being removed.
The solder joint on contact 30 appears to have partially melted due to the heat on the spool holder, as is evident from the appearance of the solder joint.
I believe I have detected traces of verdigris on some of the thin coil windings, likely indicating that the insulation of some windings has been compromised and the coil wire has oxidized.
It's still the original relay, and the production date is likely week 9 of 1994.
I think I'll replace it; it certainly can't hurt.
Where can I get this relay from, and at a good price?
Thank you and best regards,
Oliver.

@joergs, I've already tried everything. Nothing seems to be improving. It's not showing any errors.
'I've already checked everything from the magnetic valve to the catalytic converter. The NHG (noise, heat, and vibration damper) was already replaced because it was defective. The MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor) was replaced in 2002, and the wastegate, etc., have been checked.'

Fuel injection working properly? Is the diesel filter clogged? Is the fuel tank vent working?
What about logs related to load pressure, air mass, fuel injection quantity, and the limiting ranges? Do you have anything meaningful there?

Hello,
Okay, the fuel injector should be fine. I already replaced the filter, just to be sure.
I haven't found the fuel tank vent yet.
Unfortunately, I don't have a VAG-COM.
That's why things look bad with the values.
'Today I noticed that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is leaking. Also, the intake manifold boot is full of soot (about 3-4mm thick). I removed it and cleaned it. Is this normal for these engines? The car has approximately 240,000 kilometers on the odometer.'
Greetings.
