The turbo already provides quite a bit of muffling. Regarding the price: I was quoted €380 for the middle and rear silencers for my VW (without installation)! That's also an original system. I personally find that too expensive, especially when I see prices of €200 for both components here.
Best regards, WarLord.

Okay, here's my two cents.
I bid on and won an exhaust manifold, downpipe, and connecting pipe to the catalytic converter for a Passat 35i with a 1Z engine on eBay. The total price, including shipping, was 149 euros. It was an original VW part and came from Wolfsburg.
It had a few small dents when it arrived, but I didn't really mind.

Hi,
@ haehnlein
The days when you could automatically equate Leistritz with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality are probably over. I've reached a point where I'd rather accept the 100% price increase from the official dealer than have to scrape the remnants of those supposedly "just as good as original" Leistritz parts off the ground under my car every two and a half years with a gasoline engine.
Admittedly, I've never had to replace the exhaust system or parts of it on my diesel car, but all the Passat 32B, 35i, and Audi 80 models (Type 81/85 /B3/B4) that I equipped with Leistritz systems in good faith (and based on past experience ) now have the original mufflers again (assuming they are still on the road). Their lifespan, as far as I can tell, is at least twice as long as those that are slowly but surely losing their good reputation (not to mention brands like Bos.., etc.).
Best regards from Berlin.
Olli.

Well, I also looked at eBayx, but if you need the stuff right away, eBay is not an option. Well, that just showed me once again that driving a diesel isn't as cheap as it's often advertised to be. But nevertheless, I'm still saving .
The manufacturer of the system is now Walker, and if it lasts for 3 or 4 years, that's also okay. During that time, the car will have definitely reached at least 300,000 km, and by then, there will certainly be other expensive things that need to be replaced. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Sure, if it needs to be done immediately, you have a problem with those eBay guys. In my case, it had been anticipated for a longer time, and then you can 'plan' for a longer period. But even walkers won't last 3-4 years. Experiences with fuel pumps of so-called 'original equipment quality' from brands like Ernst, Bosal, or Leistritz have shown a lifespan of a maximum of 3 years. Usually, it's shortly after the 2-year warranty.

Hi Olli,
...if you have too much money, then just buy it from VW . My parts supplier has both series to choose from. There are the cheap, thin-sheet metal ones for about 30 euros less (that stuff is useless), and then there are the exact parts that are also available from VW/Audi (the mid-section and rear silencer for my Passat even only cost 180 euros and are from Ernst) . I have already installed many exhaust parts (of the better series, of course) from my supplier, and none of them have broken down with less than 200,000 km of mileage . Of course, there are parts suppliers that only sell cheap parts... but a good one generally has the VW parts available . My parts supplier is so popular in Wiesbaden that he doesn't even need a proper listing in the phone book (let alone a website). There are such suppliers in other cities as well. But if you want to pay inflated VW prices, please do... it's not my money. ____________

Hi,
I once bought a Walker catalytic converter for my Audi 100, type 43-U. After 2 years, it was already broken again. It's not worth the cost or the installation. Unfortunately, until recently, Opel had this kind of quality as standard. Audi uses stainless steel from the factory. That basically lasts forever. In my case, they just forgot to make the mounting loop for the exhaust system out of the same material, but I was able to weld it. Gruß Christian

The MSD (multiple spark discharge) is significantly larger than the one in the TD (total discharge), and well, it doesn't really dampen anything, that's for sure. The only thing you could hear when it broke off was a clatter, but there's no roaring sound like you get with a gasoline engine without an MSD and exhaust system.
You're right, the MSD apparently doesn't have a real function...
If you want to hear a 'roar,' you have to remove the cat. Then, you'll get a very loud hissing sound starting at 1200 RPM. I once drove around like that for a while to remove rust... and I couldn't stop smiling .
Regarding quality: In September 2002, I bought an MSD + ESD from Walker. The parts already look so worn out, as if they are about to fall off. There were two different options available at the time: the standard ones and the 'special' ones (allegedly specially treated metal -> lasts forever). Of course, I chose the 'special' ones. In retrospect, it became clear to me that they were just painted with another coat of paint... Original remains original.

Okay, WALKER is only worth as much as it takes to immediately and instantly melt it down again.
'However, those welds are a problem; it will void the warranty. They're bound to fail within 2 years. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the distributor when the mounting bracket rusts away after just 1.5 years.'
