@bennytdi

What interests me much more is that, according to the daily mileage counter in your photo, you've already driven 1183 kilometers, and the fuel gauge shows about a quarter full. Did you forget to reset it, or is that actually possible?

"Since the MFA (multifunction display) shows a consumption of 8.x liters per 100 kilometers, I think it was impossible to achieve that with a full tank... and at that speed, it's bound to consume quite a bit of fuel... but driving more conservatively and at a lower speed of 120 km/h would definitely make it achievable."

Unfortunately, not quite as sharp, but here's a picture of the ARL with the DRW transmission for your interest.

http://dan.jel.bei.t-online.de/arldrw.jpg

I still had a little bit of leeway, but I didn't want to push it too far.
I'll do that today (Saturday) on the way to Oberhausen, but just this once! icon_wink.gif

According to the digital display in the climate control system, he was traveling at exactly 216 km/h with the engine running at 4000 RPM.
What about the ARL engine when it comes to the original ERF or EFF transmission?
Does the engine run at a higher or lower speed?

Best regards and happy travels (may your journey be smooth).
Daniel.

Since I trust the speedometers in these cars at high speeds about as much as I trust a sundial in the rain, I'm wondering how one can accurately determine the actual speed being driven, within a few kilometers per hour.

Wasn't there something about this being possible via GPS?

"The speedometer's tendency to overestimate speed is generally limited, especially at higher speeds. With standard tires, the overestimation is usually a maximum of 5% or less, which would be 10 km/h at 200 km/h. This corresponds to what is often found in measurements and repeatedly posted here. In my case, it's 4% at 200 km/h, but already a significant 5-7 km/h, or over 10%, at 50 km/h."

With a GPS device, you can determine the speed with an accuracy of up to 1 km/h. The actual accuracy is even significantly higher than that.

It's great to have a device like that at your disposal...

Uwe

Hi,

GPS... what else?

Used or as an add-on for PDAs, they can sometimes be quite cheap – I paid just 15 euros for mine two years ago, for example.

On my IBI scooter, the discrepancy in the maximum speed reading is around 5%. The displayed value of 210 km/h corresponds to a real speed of 200 km/h.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hi,

Yes, I forgot to reset the fuel gauge icon_cool.gif. So, ignore the 11xx km... Usually, I drive between 650 and 800 kilometers with one tank of gas... I have a 62-liter tank.

I only turned on the left turn signal because I was just switching from the middle lane to the left lane icon_razz.gif.

I find the picture of the other ARL even cooler... What would yours be running at if it reaches 4500 RPM icon_rolleyes.gif icon_question.gif 240 km/h or more icon_question.gif?

Best regards, Beny.

What kind of gearbox is that 'DRW' gearbox? Is it something special, or just a standard front-wheel drive gearbox for the Golf IV?

I'm already excited to see the photo icon_cool.gif.

The DRW is a 6-speed gearbox used in the fourth generation Golf, originally intended for engines with the AJM code and 115 horsepower.
'It SHOULD be translated into a longer version, but I'm not entirely sure yet because it seems like no one really has a good understanding of how to convert the gear ratios.'
It's not just a different number of teeth; it's also a different translation to the drive shafts.

It definitely complied with the regulations, and the TÜV inspector also noted it in the documentation.

Okay, thank you.
That accuracy probably applies more to newer cars. In the past, I always heard how fast a Golf 2 with 90 horsepower could go, supposedly around 210 km/h according to the speedometer, well, that's probably more than enough. icon_wink.gif
That's why I'm always skeptical about these things. Even under good conditions, our 100 horsepower variant reaches 205 km/h on the speedometer, which is about 27 km/h more than what's stated in the vehicle registration document.
Unfortunately, the VW navigation system cannot display the speed.

Hi,

I myself drive the ARL as a front-end developer icon_wink.gif.

I was driving at approximately 220 km/h (about 137 mph) according to the speedometer at 4000 RPM, possibly a bit slower.

@ Dan.jel I just took a picture at 2000 rpm, you can compare it to yours! I'm driving to Hamburg tonight, and if I remember, I'll also take a picture at 4000 rpm icon_wink.gif.

I just saw that you're from Soltau, I think I need to visit you sometime icon_wink.gif. I'm originally from Winsen, which is right around the corner icon_cool.gif.

Regards,

Christian.

You are welcome to visit me sometime! icon_smile.gif

This morning I checked what my speedometer showed at 2000 RPM: it was between 112 and 115. It's hard to say exactly, but it seems like there's more speed achieved at a lower engine speed.

Now, regarding my experiences from yesterday: icon_biggrin.gif

http://dan.jel.bei.t-online.de/highspeed.jpg

The image was slightly deteriorating, and I was already satisfied! icon_twisted.gif
(For those who pay attention to detail: You need to add 130 km to the trip odometer. I reset it to zero at the beginning because I was using a route planner.)

The 232 km/h that I briefly reached, according to the speedometer, were not captured in any photos.
On a straight road with plenty of acceleration, I've reached 220 kilometers per hour according to the speedometer.
While going uphill, I didn't drop below 200 km/h on the entire A2 highway... icon_wink.gif

While I was at a construction site, a BMW station wagon (model 5) blocked my way, but what can you do? I'll just go around it.
According to the sticker, it's a 530d, great!
Construction site finished, speed limit lifted, full throttle ahead.
I didn't believe it, and neither did he, but I stayed right behind him.
He definitely wasn't going anywhere, and then he let me pass him at 225 km/h according to the speedometer. I was like a snail passing him, but thanks to 'accelerating out of his slipstream,' I actually managed to overtake that monster! My friend unfortunately braked too late, otherwise I would have had a great photo of a BMW driver with his jaw dropped... icon_cool.gif

On the way back, only one vehicle was slightly faster.
Mercedes C-Class 230 Kompressor.
He didn't overtake me until lap 190, but then it became clear that he had a few more horsepower under the hood. (You don't often experience something with three lanes and absolutely no traffic jams!)
However, surprisingly, he couldn't really connect with us again.
So, approximately 5-10 km/h faster, I think that's quite a bit! icon_exclaim.gif

Okay, I want to be honest and say that the car consumed an average of 10 liters per 100 km yesterday! However, we were averaging 150 km/h over a distance of 660 km. A fuel tank capacity of about 62 liters was just enough.

Best regards,
Dan.jel <<with>>

Hi,

I also have to say that I find the fuel consumption sometimes a bit too high... My 4motion uses quite a bit more... Once, I drove at full speed for a longer distance, and it averaged 12-13 liters... even though there was a lot of driving at 180-200 km/h icon_rolleyes.gif icon_mad.gif icon_cry.gif. I didn't think that was great... because the maximum speed reached was only 220-225 km/h.
The instantaneous fuel consumption display shows 19.3 liters per hour at full throttle icon_eek.gif.

Best regards, Benny.

Hello everyone!
After all this boasting about top speed, I feel compelled to leave a comment.
I also enjoy driving fast when the road conditions allow it, and I don't mind if others drive even faster (I always make sure to give them plenty of space).
But I find it absolutely reckless and irresponsible to be fiddling with a digital camera at the speeds being discussed here, just to take pictures of the car icon_twisted.gif.
If it absolutely has to be done, then at least let a passenger in the back seat take the picture. All other road users will thank you for the significant improvement in traffic safety! icon_biggrin.gif

Regards,
Alex.
