Hello everyone,
My friend has a Skoda Octavia 1.8L TSI manufactured in 2015. This car (in Norway) was owned by various people, and after visiting 4 different workshops and undergoing numerous repairs, they were told that the car could not be fixed and that they should give up on it.
I regularly use VCDS with my cars, so I was wondering if I could be of assistance.
First, I wanted to read out the car's data. But unfortunately, I'm getting the message from VCDS: "Gateway not supported." I have the latest version of VCDS, and of course, it's the genuine version.
After my research, I analyzed the OBD2 connector and found the following results:
The following PINs are assigned to the following values:
PIN 1; 12.16V
PIN 4; Ground.
PIN 5; Ground.
PIN 6; 0.052V
PIN 14; 0.052V
PIN 15; 4.1V
PIN 16; 12.16V
When the ignition is off, the voltage reads 16.12.5V.
I've read several posts already, but somehow I'm still stuck. Is it possible that the engine control unit is broken?
Does anyone have any ideas?
I would be very grateful for any help.
Best regards,
Carsten

The occupancy looks correct.
Pin 1 is the ignition positive terminal.
4 + 5 are mass.
6 + 14 are CAN messages and are being sent to gateway J533.
"15 is the L-line for triggering the wake-up function and connects to the airbag control unit (STG) at a minimum."
"The gateway not being supported surprises me. I'm not familiar with this message. Which VCDS interface are you using? Is it the current HEX Can V2?" Have you ever tried directly accessing the engine control unit (ECU) or similar components instead of using an autoscanner?
In another forum, it's mentioned that the gateway seems to have frozen, and disconnecting the battery restored communication.
If everything above is okay, I would first disconnect the battery, wait 5 minutes, and then reconnect it. If that doesn't solve the problem, the gateway and the wiring to the diagnostic connector should be checked. After that, it probably just comes down to replacing the gateway.
What are the actual problems with this car? (Aside from the lack of diagnostic capabilities).

Hey,
Yes, I've tried using Auto-Scan. However, I've also tried individual scans, and in those cases, I get the message "KLine Init failed." And the control unit is not responding.
Best regards,
Carsten.

Hi guste100,
Yes, I have the HEX-V2.
I had disconnected the battery to charge it for many days. After that, there was no improvement.
I'll check the wiring right away. But shouldn't it be okay if all the cables are providing reasonable values? Still, I'll do a visual inspection. It's not much work.
Yes, what a mess. I used to enjoy that too. Right now, the engine starts and immediately shuts off. Could it be the fuel pump, or something else? I asked my friend about it. But he can't tell me anything. He drives cars, but that's all he knows. Unfortunately.
Best regards,
Carsten.

Too bad, it looks good from the settings.
VCDS says "CAN not ready," even though you are measuring something on pins 6 and 14. Can you directly connect to the engine control unit (ECU) via CAN?
Okay, so directly to control unit address 1. If that works, then CAN communication is fundamentally functional. If that's not the case, the problem is likely either with the CAN wiring to the gateway or with the gateway itself.
Because the gateway isn't responding via CAN, you already know.

Hey,
I'm a bit confused now. Are you suggesting connecting it directly to the engine control unit? So, should I select the engine control unit and just read the data from it?
Carsten.

Okay, most likely the CAN bus isn't working, or it's a homemade anti-theft system.
"Trace the two CAN lines (pin 6 & 14) from the OBD2 connector towards the gateway. Also, try disconnecting the connector at the gateway and measuring its connections." The two lines must only go to the gateway.

Hey,
I just took a look at the wiring. It seems like it's not going to be that simple. I have to remove quite a bit. Unfortunately, the weather is bad, and I can't get the car into the garage. So, I have to postpone it.
Okay, something else. The gateway is the box located in the engine compartment. Does it tend to fail often? I found a dealer who sells used ones. Does that make sense? What should I be aware of? I read something about a component list. Does it make sense to exchange the item?
Best regards,
Carsten.

Hi Rainer,
I'm ruling that out, but I'll take a look anyway. My friend is an artist and he never does anything to his car himself; he always takes it to the dealership. But they don't know what to do next.
I'll take a look at the box in the engine compartment.
Thank you.
Carsten.

I measured the pins against ground. Is that correct? Or do I need to compare 6 4 against each other?
I am not an expert. Unfortunately!

I would first check the CAN wiring from the OBD2 port to the gateway.
