Place a block of dry ice in front of the ventilation system; this is usually sufficient for a short period of full gas operation.
Or you can run the diesel return line along a cold air conditioning pipe... that helps... icon_wink.gif

It only makes the entire engine more complicated.

Simply more boost and more fuel injection. That's all you need.

Absolutely! And from nothing comes nothing. So, anyone who believes that the consumption decreases when requesting the corresponding performance is mistaken.

Our traffic is so dense, and the TDIs are usually equipped with engines that allow you to generally maintain any desired speed within the flow of traffic.

When a performance upgrade is added, the actual speed achieved often remains the same in many cases. Only the acceleration is slightly faster, but it takes less time to reach the speed that would normally be achieved with the standard engine output.

Therefore, in these cases, there is actually no increase in fuel consumption. Due to the increased torque, it is often possible to drive in a higher gear, which can even result in a slight decrease in fuel consumption. Only when driving on a clear road and frequently using the extra power will fuel consumption increase.

Overall, I've been using less fuel since the modification compared to the stock performance.

That's not entirely correct. I once gave my turbo a 'shower.' On about 2 kilometers of highway at approximately 170 km/h, I injected about 0.25 liters of water into the intake manifold (just behind the intercooler).
However, it didn't achieve anything noticeable icon_sad.gif, and it apparently didn't cause any harm icon_smile.gif.

Well, practice makes perfect.

The question is whether the effort is worth it.

Aside from the "tuning sausage" icon_lol.gif, there are plenty of other things that fall into the same category. These include heat shield tape for the exhaust manifold, enlarging intake passages or eliminating bottlenecks, streamlining the polishing of various surfaces (intake manifold, channels, etc.), and even an additional fuel cooler in the diesel supply, to name a few. Overall, it might be noticeable to some extent, but the question remains about the effort involved.

I've also been thinking about the issue with the additional fuel coolers.
Simply based on the fact that colder fuel has a higher density than hot diesel. I wasn't sure to what extent the electronics might interfere with this. I'd be interested to see what the actual results would be.

Regarding water injection: When water is added to the intake air, it enters the combustion chamber in some form and is compressed there.
While it probably won't cause any flooding, I'd rather not know what the pressure conditions are like.

The measures you listed do not increase performance in a TDI engine. Optimizations in the intake system improve airflow in naturally aspirated engines. In a turbocharged engine, the turbocharger spins a few more revolutions, and the desired amount of air reaches the cylinder.

The engine control unit (ECU) is kept informed about the fuel temperature and adjusts the fuel injection amount accordingly. A heat shield... does that increase boost pressure? Such measures are absolutely useless.

"I also experimented with water injection back in the 80s. The vehicle in question was a Fiat Uno Turbo. The water results in a more homogeneous combustion process and a slightly lower combustion temperature due to the heat absorbed by the water as it evaporates in the intake manifold."

The effort involved is considerable, as at least a 5-liter tank needs to be installed somewhere, and the water level needs to be constantly monitored. This is because the engine parameters are calibrated to the water injection system, and if there is no water, the engine cannot operate within its optimal range.

The result was impressive. It produced 150 horsepower and a sensational torque value, which we were unable to determine due to the lack of a suitable testing facility. The buyers weren't particularly interested in that detail at the time. A test drive, with the wheels spinning in second gear, and the kit was sold!

A water hammer is only a concern if the water injection system malfunctions and releases a surge of water. Only small amounts are injected, and the water will definitely have evaporated long before it reaches the combustion chamber.

Today, achieving the same performance increase (110 -> 150 horsepower) is much easier with a simple chip modification. Back then, for a complete conversion of the Uno, the customer had to pay over 10,000 DM, although this price included other modifications.

That's what I meant; these are all methods that don't produce a noticeable effect, but are still occasionally used. I can imagine that the combined effect of many such measures might achieve something.

These heat shield bands are designed to increase the temperature in front of the turbine.
Similar to the new air-gap insulated manifolds of the R5-TDI or the V10 TDI.
Furthermore, the heat from the compressor should be kept away from it.
Whether that will actually make a difference is debatable.

I also don't think a water hammer is likely. But the compression ratio of a diesel engine is often twice as high as that of a gasoline engine. I don't know exactly how it would work, but I would definitely have concerns about injecting water, even if it's just small, finely atomized amounts.

However, those who have been using water injection systems for a longer time and have corresponding experience should probably comment on this.

icon_lol.gif 10,000 DM for 40 horsepower! And then someone says that diesel tuning is infinitely more expensive compared to gasoline tuning.
