According to current expectations, Seat will likely release a Cupra version of the Ibiza in early 2004, featuring the well-known 150 hp TDI PD engine from the Leon TopSport/Golf GTI TDI.

...I think it's absolutely brilliant because the Ibiza only weighs 1200 kg!
I'm just curious how expensive it will be; I hope it won't be more expensive than the Leon TDI Top Sport!
I think SEAT cars are really great; they have a lot of power!

'only' 1200 kg???????????
'That's definitely too much for such a small vehicle.'
I have a different idea about cars than the automotive industry does.
I'm just saying, a Lotus Elise. That's all you need for driving.

...a prankster... and a Formula 1 car is even better... obviously!
...but I'm talking about current diesel vehicles! In that case, 1200 kg is already a good weight for 150 horsepower from a diesel engine!

Are they using diesel engines in Formula 1 now?

Reading sentences like that not only hurts your eyes.
I would like to look for a new keyboard, preferably one where the keys don't double-register.
Sure, it's a nice car, and I might even like it myself. But with the prices of new cars these days, I wouldn't buy something like that anyway. But then you start having crazy ideas, like putting a 150 horsepower engine into a Golf3 . VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

.......the prices of new Seat cars are relatively reasonable; for example, you can get a Seat Leon TDI Topsport with 150 horsepower as an EU import for around 18,000 euros. Instead of buying a used, worn-out Golf IV GTI TDI for the same price, I'd rather buy a brand new car!

'It's strange that modern cars are packed with so much high-tech equipment, yet no one seems to be able to build them light enough. If a car weighs 900 kg, even a 1.4 TDI engine would provide the same performance.'
The Lotus Elise was perhaps an unfortunate example chosen by me, but it's meant to illustrate that it is possible to build lightweight and fuel-efficient cars today.
The 1.4 TDI would certainly be a decent alternative to the Rover engine in the Lotus.
I just can't understand why cars are getting heavier and heavier. My Polo already weighs almost 1000 kg, but the Seat is another 200 kg heavier. No wonder they need to put in 150 horsepower then.
Just to be clear, I really like the Ibiza, especially the Cupra version, but looks alone aren't enough.
Best regards,
Ingo

Okay, here's a really, really dumb question:
'What do you need 150 horsepower in a car like that for? To beat everyone at traffic light races? In everyday life, 100 horsepower is more than enough in a car like this! Or not? Sure, it's cool to drive something with that much power, but the question of its suitability for daily use can't always be answered with a simple 'yes,' right?'

Have you also looked into insurance for something like that (a small rocket car)? Besides that, if you think 150 horsepower and 1200 kg is a good ratio, then get the Skoda Fabia RS with "only" 130 horsepower and 1090 kg. But even that shouldn't be considered a cheap car to maintain.

I just can't understand why cars are getting heavier and heavier.
'People always say you absolutely need 10 airbags, ESP, ASR, navigation, climate control, etc. Personally, I would be happy with ABS, power steering, and just 2 airbags. If the car weighed 200 kg less, I would gladly accept that!'
'My Alfa 156 2.4 JTD has 175 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque... sounds great, but with a curb weight of 1500 kg, it all becomes relative, and those smaller cars like the Ibiza TDI PD or Skoda Fabia RS are actually much faster!!!'
...that's why I'm exchanging the big noisy toy for a smaller one!

Monchi.

I just find the design disgusting... ugh.
By the way, weight: Also, air conditioning is a must.
Otherwise, my Ascona weighed 1140 kg as a 2.0i automatic, including the driver. And it was somewhat larger than something like an ashtray.
that's all about the weight .

A Seat is a good and beautiful car!

Hi Matthias,
Where did you get the figure of 1090 kg for the weight of the Fabia?
As far as I know, the 130 weighs 1245 kg when empty, which makes it even a hundred kilograms heavier than the 130 Ibiza 2-door version!
I definitely don't believe that the Cupra only weighs 1200 kg; in my opinion, it will likely weigh at least around 1250 kg.
Simply replacing the ASZ with an ARL is no longer sufficient these days, because at a minimum, climate control will have to be included (which means having a good hundred kilograms of useless ballast on board for at least 10 months of the year }, reducing driving pleasure and increasing fuel consumption), along with some more insulation material (because one should be able to drive comfortably fast), and the giant tires - suddenly, you've added the weight of an invisible passenger }, whom you constantly have to carry around.
What would interest me even more is the emission class.
I would find it quite illogical to bring a new car onto the market that is already banned for new cars after just one year due to its emissions class.
How could Seat overcome this?
1. somehow manage to incorporate the ARL into the D4.
Instead of the ARL engine, install one of the new 2.0-liter 16V TDI engines.
3. Contrary to all announcements, the Cupra will not initially be offered as a diesel version.
A Seat dealer from Saarbrucken recently told me about version 1... I'm curious to see what actually happens. Gruß Ulf

eiyo....it was super cheap (because it's an automatic) and had great pull (because it's light). What more could you want? It really is a proper 1400kg GTI. I miss the old-school design a bit, because that created the effect .
And whether Seat is good... we'll have to wait and see.

Why shouldn't 150 horsepower be practical for everyday use? I don't find 150 horsepower in a 1.7-ton 5 Series BMW to be very practical. For a long time, I drove a Golf2 16V with 130 horsepower in my daily life, and frankly, it could have handled a few more horsepower without any issues.
"The TDI with 90 horsepower isn't exactly ideal, but that's all I could afford right now. I think people should check what kind of car the other person drives before making such statements. With the TDI, you have to really think twice about whether and how you can overtake because it takes forever at 80 km/h. So, 150 horsepower with a weight of 1300 kg is just okay; it's not exactly exhilarating!"

Hi Ulf, I think I saw the magazine from Autovision on DSF (a German TV channel). It aired sometime last week, and you said (I'm paraphrasing) that the small car weighs just over a ton, then you listed 1090kg in the technical specifications. So, I remembered that my Golf also has 130 horsepower, and suddenly I thought that I might be driving the slowest 130hp TDI out there. According to the vehicle registration document, mine weighs 1340kg, it's a five-door model, and not only does it have all the standard soundproofing materials, but also all sorts of extras, so it's probably even heavier.
I'm not going to say whether that value is correct right now, but I do know that this value was mentioned. I'm going to check the Skoda website now...
If I'm wrong, please forgive me; as I said, I was just repeating what I heard.
Matthias.
