@ Ulf
Regarding the specific incident, I must say: I have no idea what happened; it all went very quickly, and I was quite startled. Who would believe that a car in front of you, driving straight on a straight road, would suddenly swerve into the guardrail? icon_eek.gif Otherwise, thankfully, I haven't had to use the emergency brake ("Anker") in my car a second time. I only experience ABS activation in my Golf during the winter; even on wet roads, you have to deliberately provoke it, or, better said, with my driving style, which is probably more "adapted," it almost never intervenes.
However, even a single instance of insufficient braking performance is enough, so I want to switch to brakes like those from Zimmermann if the need arises.

Hi,

Dry, flat road surface and tires of size 225/45 R17 with identical tire pressure.

If you don't engage all the power from the very beginning, you won't be able to activate the ABS shortly after.

The similarly sized system in the G III GTI previously exhibited a tendency to "grenade" (i.e., abruptly decelerate) regardless of whether it was an emergency full stop from maximum speed or a descent down the Großglockner mountain road.
The handling in the G III was significantly more aggressive. Wheelspin was unknown under normal driving conditions. I can't believe that the difference is solely due to the paperweight of 191 kg.

My idea for brake tuning so far has been to use the 312mm disc from the V6 engine.
Gruß

"I've also been thinking about that, Roger. However, the question then becomes which option is more cost-effective. Do you have any more information on that?"

Regarding brake feel: My brakes always feel somewhat spongy, while our ALH has a solid bite point. Well, if you drive four different Golfs, the brakes will feel different in each one. Maybe my wife does better. She uses gas, then brake, then gas... quite binary. I tend to roll and gently apply the brakes. Probably, I've "weaned" them off something. icon_razz.gif

If the brake pads and rotors are due for replacement anyway, then the additional cost likely only covers the price difference for the other caliper brackets, anchor plate, and a few small parts.

The doughy feeling, in my opinion, comes from the mechanical brake assist system. In the Golf V, it feels a bit better. In the Polo 9N, it actually feels quite good icon_wink.gif.

It can't be the brake assist system because it doesn't exist. Although the car was manufactured in 08/02, it seems like it wasn't included as standard equipment by the Dutch. At least, I haven't noticed it yet. Does anyone know the equipment code for it? In my father's Mercedes, you can activate the brake assist (BAS) by briefly pressing the brake pedal lightly. I only tried it once in my Golf, but I think I don't have it.

Okay, I agree with you, Roger. You're right that only the anchor plates need to be removed. Maybe we should replace the screws too. But what does a V6 disc cost compared to the "normal" one I have? I think maybe the manufacturer was more stingy with production numbers for the Golf.

...arrrrg, and those huge 15-inch summer tires would have to go. They are so beautiful icon_rolleyes.gif, but then I would only need to use my 16-inch winter tires. At least those are honest steel rims.

Hmm, my 9N can't fit 14-inch rims anymore because of the front brakes; 15-inch is the minimum size.

I haven't done any longer emergency braking maneuvers before; I only did one instance where I braked quite firmly from approximately 180 km/h to 120 km/h (if I recall correctly), and it felt reassuringly quick according to my standards.

I'm going to occasionally floor it on a dry country road at 100 km/h and see what happens...

Well, the wheels wouldn't be a problem for me. The winter tires in 16" are the smallest size available.

The panes with dimensions 312x25 cost €130 each.
Brake caliper carrier with bolt: €120 each.
Sentence: Toppings cost 124 euros.
+ new screws

"I upgraded the brakes on my 1Z with solid rotors measuring 256mm in diameter at the front, and I've now drilled them. I'm using ATE brake pads. The previous brakes on my 1Z were Jurid parts. The performance difference between the two braking systems is like night and day. The wet braking performance is also significantly better."
"On my Golf2 16V, I had original VW brake discs with Ferodo DS2000 pads, which I replaced with the original pads. The main improvement was in braking from high speeds, especially a reduction in brake fade. However, I found that the Ferodos performed worse when braking from cold."
"On a Daewoo I once owned, I also had ATU brand tires installed. Well, let's just say I probably won't be using that brand again..."

I would like to try the Zimmermann slotted discs combined with Ferodo DS2000 brake pads again. I'll see how long the ATE pads last on the slotted discs. After about 20,000 km with this combination, the brakes still look very good, and there are no warped rotors.

Hi there,

Here are the experiences I can offer:

Golf II brake pads from ATU (whatever brand they are, not original!). Braking in the city is okay, but very poor when slowing down quickly from speeds above 100 km/h: The braking force builds up slowly, accompanied by a whining noise from the brakes. The deceleration is worse than with older, original brake pads. Later, I installed genuine VW brake pads and then the braking was good again, even from highway speeds...

"Same symptoms with pads from Bosch service on a t4! While you can definitely achieve more braking power by pressing harder, it feels like I'm applying significantly more force than the additional braking force actually provides..."

Golf IV, old brake pads, and the assumption that they were not the originals or first replacements. New ones from VW: excellent braking performance, as expected from other brands' Golfs (IV).

"I would advise against buying third-party products that are cheaper. You don't change brake discs and pads very often, do you? And one instance of a longer braking distance can cause more damage than buying genuine parts once."
One could also afford more expensive or better "sports brake pads," provided they actually offer a significant improvement: lasting longer or providing better braking performance, although for me, at least with the Golf IV, the original brakes are sufficient.

Hi Alex,

I have been buying brake parts for various VWs and Audis from my trusted parts dealer for years, and I have never had any problems. He sells parts from well-known brands (ATE, Jurid, etc.), which, in my opinion, are no worse than the original parts and are also often stocked by VW. However, you need to find a good parts dealer. I don't want to rule out that there might be some bad apples selling cheap, low-quality parts icon_exclaim.gif.

Hi Peter,

Okay, from a physical perspective, the limit of a brake's performance is reached when the wheels lock up or when ABS kicks in. Unless you are suffering from severe muscle atrophy in your legs, this should be achievable even with relatively inexpensive brake components...or am I missing something icon_question.gif?

Hi,

A few years ago, I had exactly the same experiences with brake pads for the G2 as PeterK did.
With a trailer attached and a 100kg motocross bike on board, the brakes were completely unable to lock up! The braking distance was unacceptable, so I discarded the nearly new brake pads and switched back to the original parts.
Therefore, I assume that not much has actually happened at the company with the three-letter name in the meantime.

I'm certainly not a fan of wasting money or overpriced original products, but in my opinion, the manufacturer and seller of this shoddy merchandise should be taken to court!
I don't want to know how many people are now buried in the cemetery because of that junk!

Best regards, Rainer.

@ everyone

"I was able to acquire a complete V6 brake system at a very good price (with 312mm rotors in the front and internally ventilated rotors in the rear), including all the necessary components. I'll let you know when I start working on it, but it will be a while."

You can, it's not exactly a secret.
I called the junkyard and they told me to come by and see what's there.
UnIf it's not good enough, you'll probably find it on eBay soon.
"If it significantly improves braking performance, then the cost is worth it to me. I'll just have to consider whether I should also upgrade the rear axle, because I don't think that will make much of a difference... but we'll see."
