hello everyone,
This website is really great. I'm sorry I only discovered it now!
I will soon need to have the timing belt replaced. The last time, it cost me 1200 DM, and the car wouldn't even start. I went to the VAG specialists twelve times, and they couldn't find anything wrong. Then I went to a small independent workshop, and the mechanic fixed it without any problems. Unfortunately, that guy is no longer around , and my trust in the VAG specialists is gone!
'Has anyone had experience with doing the replacement themselves? Can you send me a guide, post it, etc.? I'm actually quite experienced. I just haven't had to deal with this particular issue before. The link for the timing belt replacement on a Golf III TDI was helpful, but it's not a Passat! '
Is it even possible to replace that part myself? }

Hello Jörg.
I'm more of an expert on air-cooled vehicles, but in this book you'll find a lot of information about (almost) all the problems that can occur with the Passat.
This also includes routine maintenance work, or the replacement of components (e.g., fuel injectors, engine parts, etc.).

EUR 19.50
It's a lot of money, but I don't regret buying it.
Often, there are also tips on specialized tools, or how to help yourself if you don't have them .
Regards,

Hello,
You can also use the instructions on this page to replace the timing belt on a Passat; there's no difference. Following the book mentioned above, I built the alignment tool and the locking pin to secure the camshaft and fuel injection pump, and then got started. The most challenging part is the limited space, but if you take your time, it's doable. Definitely, you can save a lot of money on workshop prices; even independent garages charge outrageous amounts because everyone thinks the timing belt is some kind of mysterious component. At some point, the fuel injection start should be checked and possibly corrected using VAG 1551 or VAG-COM, but that's not very expensive.
Don't be afraid! / Be brave! / Hang in there!
Best regards, Albrecht.

Hello fellow enthusiasts,
Yesterday, I performed the belt replacement. Thanks to the recommended literature and a bit of intuition, everything went quite well. The engine is running smoothly again. The only thing left to do is adjust the fuel injection pump (my friend is now producing a little more smoke in the higher RPM range ). In another thread here, I read that a static adjustment of the start of injection using a gauge (according to Etzold's book) is perfectly sufficient. Is this correct? Please share your opinions!

Hello,
Congratulations first of all, that it worked out. A static setting is, of course, also possible. "Dynamic" might be a bit of an exaggeration, so I wouldn't twist the pump while the engine is running .
However, in my opinion, it's still easier and faster to use the dynamic settings if you have access to the devices.
Best regards, Albrecht.

It's me again.
I have now adjusted the injection pump's timing according to ETZHOLD using a measuring gauge! There wasn't really anything else to it (except that it's difficult to access ). I also checked the entire adjustment again with VAG-COM, and it fits perfectly. The soot emissions are much better. I think I might have to adjust something else on the control unit!
By the way, I was at Bosch yesterday and bought a meter adapter. The master technician was very approachable. He told me that he and his team only use a meter to adjust the 1Z, and that it works perfectly . I can only confirm that!

I've changed timing belts many times before, and I've never had to adjust the pump afterward.
Before disassembling the old belt, I mark two teeth on the injection pump, camshaft sprocket, and crankshaft sprocket. Then, I transfer these markings to the new belt and install it accordingly. This way, everything aligns perfectly without needing to fix the pump in place, and no adjustments are necessary afterward.

@hannes
What do you do if the pump wasn't working correctly from the beginning, as was obviously the case with mine?
It was previously replaced by someone working on VW/Audi vehicles. As described above, the car wasn't running well before. I visited the official dealership several times, then took it to an independent workshop. They apparently installed the timing belt incorrectly and compensated for it with pump adjustments. Now the timing belt is correctly positioned, the pump is adjusted properly, and the car runs better than ever!

Hi.
...and measure the fuel injection timing voltage while the vehicle is in operation.
In my opinion, this method allows you to easily identify and troubleshoot any misconfiguration or malfunction, whether it occurs before or after a timing belt replacement.
