Good evening, everyone.

I started working on the Passat, which has 117,000 km on the clock, after getting back from vacation. Today, I began the timing belt replacement. I have to say that I've only done this job before on our Golf (engine code VP37, MKB AQM) by myself. This will be my first time doing it on our family car, which has a pump-injector system.

"Schlossträger" is in service mode, which was because it was a first-generation product, a bit fiddly, but not impossible. After several attempts, I've now also managed to properly secure the camshaft, and I've locked the crankshaft with the corresponding tool. That went without any problems. You just have to slide the crankshaft locking tool in from the front, not from the top... icon_biggrin.gif

Okay, here are the questions I have for you for tomorrow:
1.) I'll replace the water pump as well; that seems logical. The timing belt kit from Conti that I bought included a tensioner pulley, an idler pulley, and two new nuts for both pulleys. I think I read somewhere in this forum that the mounting bolts should also be replaced?

2.) Ich würde die beiden Keilrippenriemen mit ersetzen wollen. Was sollte Eurer Meinung nach darüber hinaus noch mit ersetzt werden? WWhat should I do?
Should I pay attention?

Thank you for your help, and best regards.

Holger.

Den Stehbolzen für die Spannrolle würde ich auf jeden Fall ersetzten, obschon man darüber geteilter Meinung ist. Den 2. BoPlease provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English. I need the text to be able to provide a translation.

Only adjust the angular position (45°) of the tensioner mounting bracket once you've confirmed that the V-belt tension is correct, which should be no earlier than after the motor has been run for 2-4 cycles.

KW and NW Simmerings are generally reliable, but it's still a good idea to check them.
The same applies to the tensioning rollers for the two KRR units.[/quote]

Here's a brief closing message.

It's running great again, the issue for the next 120,000 km is resolved, and it was actually fun. Thanks again for the tip to only rotate the tensioner pulley 45 degrees after properly adjusting it. I probably would have made a mistake if I hadn't. icon_cry.gif So, the angle gauge I bought a long time ago finally got used.

I noticed the water cooler. After 8 years and 117,000 km, the area around the lower quick-release connector already shows quite a bit of corrosion. I'd be interested to know, based on your professional experience, how long this component typically lasts, and whether I should consider replacing it proactively. In my Golf (details in my signature), I had to replace the cooler after just under 11 years and 160,000 km because it was simply leaking.

In our family car, which we also use for vacations, it somehow creates a feeling of unease in the stomach area.

Have a nice evening.

Best regards, Holger.

Based on my experience, the cooler in the 3B model lasts anywhere from 40,000 km to 350,000 km – and I'm not kidding.

If the radiator is already damp or showing signs of condensation, replace it.

Otherwise, include a suitable coolant sealant in your onboard equipment. Water is readily available almost everywhere.

To help with paranoia, the ADAC (German Automobile Club) can be useful, as it provides a reassuring feeling icon_wink.gif.

Hello,
/viewtopic.php?t=23332&highlight=k%FChler
I'll share my experience towards the end of the thread. The aftermarket radiator I installed was thicker/deeper than the original one, and it quickly started rubbing! It's a real pain, so you should be careful about that!

PS: Is it true that for the AVB 2005 model, the belt needs to be replaced every 120,000 km? For the AVB 2003 model, it's every 90,000 km...

According to the maintenance schedule that the local VW dealer printed out for me, the service interval is supposed to be 120,000 kilometers.

Best regards, Holger.
