I tried this out on my ATJ for the first time last summer, and it worked without any real problems. You can find some pictures here:

I completely removed or shifted the front panel aside so I could clearly see what I was doing. This is certainly not necessary if you have enough experience. The crankshaft stop can easily be misaligned when pushed in – but with the front completely disassembled, you can see that very well.
Important tip (I think I saw this in the forum before): After setting the 4mm and rotating the motor for a few minutes, wait before checking the adjustment value again.
I got some of the parts from the Original VW Parts shop (AHW), but I still had to cut a piece off the water pump.
Instructions can be found in the "Etzold" or "Erwin" manuals.
I also replaced the tensioner bolt for the idler pulley. Depending on their condition, you may also need to replace the timing belt tensioner and the serpentine belt tensioner.
