Hi,
I've read before that the rubber-metal bearing on the transmission is often the first component to fail.
Mine is broken too - I've suspected it for quite a while.
I actually noticed that when reversing, the engine "stalls" when the clutch is disengaged. Then, after it retracts from its position, it goes back in.
I'm familiar with this behavior from starting up and a defective front hydraulic mount on the G2.
"You don't often drive in reverse, and even when you do, it's usually not with much force, so I only noticed it now."
The fun part is definitely when I pull the carburetor up and push the alternator down. Then, it clearly protrudes a few centimeters out of the bearing, and it does so without any dampening.
Okay, I'm going to replace the bearing – maybe that will also get rid of those weird drone-like noises...
The 1Z (and AAA and AFN) purchased the 3A0 199 402 for approximately EUR 32.

Hello,
Recently, I replaced the clutch on my Golf 1Z, and while I was at it, I also replaced the rear left wheel bearing.
The metal plate, where the gearbox support is attached, has detached from the rest of the bearing. It can be pulled apart and also twisted.
That would fit with your problem. Gruss Oliver.

"My car had the same problem. You can also check it by engaging the parking brake, putting the car in reverse, and gently releasing the clutch. I could clearly see the engine turning and lifting. Hi Wutz.
Generally, you are correct about the test.
I don't need to test anything else, because I can lift the motor out of the bearing with my hand .
Press firmly on the Lima and it will come out of the damaged bearing. If you then pull on the intake manifold, you'll get the few centimeters described above.
To minimize wear and tear in its current condition, I no longer use engine braking, as that puts stress on the rear bearings.

Hello,
My storage area looked the same. The brown sludge was also leaking out of it.
My car doesn't have ABS yet, but if you remove the expansion tank, you can reach the central screw with a long extension. Gruss Oliver.

Here are a few more clues that point to a faulty engine mount, which I only noticed now with the new one:
(1) There's a clunking sound when driving over or down curbs with the front axle (I always thought it was my wheel suspension that had some play).
(2) Load changes are felt indirectly.
(3) It's likely that the flexible pipe would have lasted longer if the bearings had been properly checked (a failure on VW's part), but unfortunately, I no longer have any warranty on the current flexible pipe, and I've already been using it for 6 months with the defective bearing.
Surprisingly, the parking situation hasn't improved significantly.
You immediately notice a significant difference with (1).
(2) I had previously attributed this to the very old clutch.
The motor appears to be completely supported by the two large bearings (its axis likely passes through the center of gravity). This means that the small bearing has relatively little to support, but it also means that it is subjected to both tensile and compressive forces, and is therefore likely to fail the quickest.

Your storage area looks pretty neat. Mine is much wetter.
You can see that the insulation on the hood is damaged, and sometimes the pipes rub against something.
I probably should get the bearing changed as well.
Two mechanics told me that, purely in terms of sound, there would be no improvements, meaning it would actually become quieter. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

I also think that they haven't changed the normal operating noise levels.
BUT: I can't afford to replace the €300 flexible hose every 22 months – I'm already worried that the one I have, which is only 6 months old, might fail again. And a defective flexible hose definitely makes noise!
Furthermore, I can now drive over curbs again without being afraid that some part of my car will fall off – I never would have thought it would be the engine.
A very simple test for the bearing (on the transmission) is: Brace yourself on the alternator, and a defective bearing will often make a "clunking" sound as it comes loose.
Be prepared for some frustrating screwing around...
"2 hours for disassembly versus 15 minutes for installation is quite a difference."

Did you do everything with goats?
Yes, that's the good quality flexible pipe. I think mine is still in good condition *knocks on wood*.

VW offered flexible pipes (Flexrohr) twice - once at a high price during an inspection, and the other time under warranty.
For the engine mount, I only used a jack to lift the engine.
My tractor is so high, I can get underneath it without using any blocks!
