Hello!
First of all, as a newcomer, I would like to commend this forum and its detailed help pages!
My question concerns the following:
In various other forums, it is recommended to add 0.2 to 0.3 liters of two-stroke oil per tankful to improve the lubrication of the fuel injection pumps. This corresponds to a ratio of 1:200 to 250.
The advantages mentioned include extending the lifespan of the ESP (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems and injectors. The desulfurization process is said to reduce the lubricating properties of diesel fuel, which is supposedly compensated for by the addition of 2-stroke oil.
Adding 2T oil is supposedly harmless because it mixes with the diesel fuel and burns completely at the high combustion temperatures of diesel engines, leaving no residue that could damage the catalytic converter.
The argument is that it's better to spend one euro per tank of fuel on 2-stroke oil than 1000 euros on a new electronic spark ignition (ESI) system.
Here are some contributions:

http://www.motor-talk.de/t365180/f78/s/thread.html
The suggestion to join a group activity usually originates from one person and is then confirmed by those who follow suit.
I have already used the search function here, but the topic has not been addressed from this particular perspective yet.
Was haltet Ihr davon? Ist an diesem Gedanken etwas dran, oder handelt es sich um eine Verkaufsförderung für eine best. Ölmarke?
Regards,
Max.

I don't think that's relevant here.
Because ESP systems sometimes have lubrication problems, the CDI (capacitor discharge ignition) from DC can be affected more frequently.
but the TDIs from the Volkswagen Group have fewer issues (they have different problems).
And the TDI models are definitely the main focus here, at least in over 90% of cases.

I heard from a seasoned logistics company owner that he always pours 1 liter of engine oil into the fuel tank of his trucks.

Perhaps one should lubricate the timing belts from time to time .

This claim is still circulating in people's minds, but it is definitely false!
The desulfurization of diesel fuel could only be advanced to the extent that it was, because suitable additives were used to restore the lubricating properties to their usual level.
Adding (motor/two-stroke) oil to diesel is therefore nonsense.
On the contrary, it can even be harmful! By adding liquids with a lower viscosity, the viscosity of the fuel mixture also increases. This means that in high-pressure injection pumps (such as the VP37), which are lubricated by leakage through extremely thin clearances, the lubrication becomes significantly worse. Gruß Bertil

Hi there,
A friend of mine, who used to be a farmer, once told me that they would pour about a liter of oil into the tractor's fuel tank with each fill-up because it supposedly increased its power.
Could it be that the higher viscosity resulted in fewer leakage losses, allowing for more fuel to be injected and thus achieving greater power output? Or how else can this be explained?
Greetings.
Eike.

Now it is possible, but I don't want to encourage that.
"We should calculate the change in viscosity and determine to what extent it has an impact. It's possible that the viscosity change falls within a range still covered by the EN590 standard, in which case I see no problems, advantages, or disadvantages." Gruß Bertil

My own experience is that adding a higher-viscosity biodiesel, in amounts of approximately 15-20%, significantly increases performance. The only possible explanation is the reduced leakage mentioned above, which results in a higher injection quantity.
Using pure biodiesel resulted in a dramatic loss of power. Only with this specific mixture did I experience the performance improvement.

Hello!
Thank you very much for the answers.
Instead of a 20% biodiesel blend, it was recommended to use 0.33% two-stroke oil.
Does it still have a lubricating effect at that concentration? The amount is supposed to be sufficient only for lubricating the ESP and injectors.
The viscosity would only change by a few decimal places, so I would disregard any changes in viscosity.
In simple terms, diesel fuel mixed with 2-stroke oil might provide better lubrication than diesel fuel alone. For ESPs (electric spindle pumps) that tend to produce shavings, improved lubrication could at least help somewhat.
Regards,
Max.

Yes + No.

The amount is supposed to be just enough for the ESP and injector cleaning.

Yes... But only the diesel version.

I would doubt that the addition is negligible.

No.
"Who told you that two-stroke oil burns completely without leaving any residue? The oil is designed for combustion temperatures that are far higher than those in a diesel engine. Below this operating range, almost all oils tend to leave deposits and carbonize. While this might potentially benefit the pump, it could ultimately damage your injectors."
There are much better additives that can be mixed with diesel to improve lubrication (e.g., naphtha, Desolite, LM-Diesel cleaner). These additives are often even approved by the manufacturers of injection systems, so you're on safe ground using them.
By the way, naphtha is one of the substitutes for sulfur in diesel fuel. Gruß Bertil

Not from Bosch. A strict NO to any fuel additives from the aftermarket.

Hello,
I've brought this topic up again. The 2-stroke oil from Liqui Moly is supposed to burn completely without leaving any residue. Some people even run their diesel engines with it undiluted, as the cetane number and viscosity are within the engine's operating range. It's also rumored to be used in workshops undiluted to restore clogged or stuck injectors due to contamination, making them functional again without disassembly.
The additive for diesel fuel is likely to become a topic of discussion at VW Group as well, especially with the increasing proportion of common-rail (CR) engines.
Does anyone here have any experience with this?
Best regards,
Christian.

Hi,
I was initially skeptical about the idea, and my doubts stemmed from whether a concentration that doesn't significantly increase viscosity could actually have any effect on lubrication.
I initially read the threads mentioned above, as well as the very long thread about engine oil. The opinions seem to be largely shaped by "Sterndocktor," but after reading his posts, I get the impression that he is a knowledgeable and competent person, not some kind of fanatic or extremist.
The reason for the addition is not the lack of sulfur, which is compensated for by other extreme pressure additives in the diesel additives, but rather the composition of the base oil. Aromatic compounds and paraffins have been reduced to promote cleaner combustion and cold resistance; however, these components provided better lubrication than the remaining naphthenes.
The two-stroke oil is supposed to be added here. The smoother engine operation is caused by the more precise mechanics of the pump and needle valves, not by changes in the cetane number.
I find it unlikely that 2-stroke oil would burn properly in a diesel engine.
I can't say anything about its long-term durability yet, and of course, I don't have a comparable engine that doesn't require 2-stroke oil.
"My engine is indeed running more smoothly. Knocking is barely noticeable except during cold starts. However, it occasionally has a slightly uneven idle, as if at least one cylinder isn't injecting fuel sufficiently or at the wrong time. These phases are significantly less frequent and weaker when using an oil additive."
Eventually, the ESDs will still need to be replaced. Gruß Christian

Since I'm generally open to experimenting and trying new things at any time, I also decided to add a small amount of 2T oil to my AJM engine. I can confirm that the engine runs more smoothly, and it seems like fuel consumption has decreased slightly. I haven't noticed any increased black smoke (soot).

Since I am generally and always open to experimentation, I once gave my AJM a shot of 2T oil.
My AJM engine also receives 0.25 liters of 2-stroke oil added to every 50 liters of diesel .
I can only confirm the quieter engine operation...
The engine runs more smoothly now, and there's less knocking.
it seems that consumption has also decreased somewhat...
Unfortunately, that didn't happen for me - the consumption has remained consistently the same.
I could not detect any increased soot formation...
I couldn't observe any increased Russian language instruction either.

Hello fellow experimenters ,
"Try it out and compare it to salad oil from Aldi (79 cents per liter). It lubricates better than diesel, is cheaper, and results in a quieter engine and better acceleration."
