Hello,

Is there a 2-liter PD diesel engine with 170 horsepower? Since when have common rail engines been used?
Used car dealers probably don't know what's under the hood of the vehicles they're selling.

Best regards,
Hans.

170 hp with Siemens PPD = potentially problematic. With CR (Common Rail): no idea, no personal long-term experience.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

Thank you for your reply. What exactly are the problems? I assume it's still a PM (Permanent Magnet) motor?
Sorry, what does PPD mean?

Regards,
Hans.

Piezo injector control in the pump-injector system. You can find plenty of information about the problems here. The injectors can become clogged under high load, which worsens the exhaust emissions, and reduces performance. Some people are satisfied with these engines, while others are not.
In the Golf V, it's always a PPD engine, while the new GTD is a CR engine. In the Passat, the change happened sometime in the middle of last year (you'll need to find out the specific engine code).
I believe that the new Audi A4 always comes with a CR engine, but I don't know if that's the case for the A3. Skoda seems to have continued using the PD 170 engine in the Octavia RS for quite some time. I have absolutely no idea about Seat.

It should be an A4. Does anyone know when Audi started using CR (common rail) technology and what the engine code (MKB) is?

The A4 model B6/B7 (type 8E) *NEVER* used common rail technology in its 4-cylinder engines. It was only with the new B8 series (type 8K) that common rail technology was introduced from the beginning.

The 6-cylinder models, on the other hand, were CR versions across all model ranges.

Oh yeah: As far as I know, all the new 4-cylinder CR engines have 4-digit model codes starting with the letter C (CBAB, CBBB, etc.).

The PD-MKBs are: BMM, BMN, BUY, BKD, BRD, BPW, BLB (for Audi A3 and A4 models).

Regards,
Peter.

A4 B7, 170 horsepower, particulate diesel filter (PPD), engine code: BRD.
A4 B8, 170 horsepower, CR (Common Rail), Engine Code: CAHA.

If you're looking for an A4 with a 4-cylinder CR engine producing 170 horsepower, then only the B8 model with the CAHA engine is an option.

Otherwise, the 170 hp engine with cylinder deactivation is still available as CBBB in the Golf and Passat.

The rule about four-digit ICD codes starting with the letter "C" is quite helpful for orientation.

Are only the 170 series "problem children" among the PPDs, or are the 140 series also affected?

'Normal' 16V engines are also slowly but surely developing problems with clogged injectors. However, the PPD (presumably a specific engine type) is much worse. All 16V engines have, or are experiencing, the problem of cracks in the cylinder head.

Wow

Ah }.
And how did you arrive at that conclusion?

Unfortunately, the world of engine technology isn't that simple or straightforward.

"16V with direct injection (PD), not particulate filter (PPF), but definitely with the initial 140 horsepower without a DPF. It was initially presented and praised, but then, when the DPF was introduced, it suddenly had an 8V engine instead."

Only the eight-cylinder engines had the CR injection system, but it wasn't available in the A4 model. The V6 engines with a 2.5L displacement had the VP44 injection system.

You're right, I even have a relative like that, I had forgotten.

Okay, and why should an EDC (like a BOSCH) 16V injector, just like Siemens PPD injectors, become clogged simply because more valves are involved?

Hello,
I'm just checking to see if anyone has any experience with the 170 hp CR engine from VAG. I'm planning to test drive one tomorrow, with a DSG transmission.
And: Does it seem unreasonable to buy a new EU 5 engine / or would it be better to go straight for an EU 6 Blue model?
Sure, here's the translation:

"Anyone?" translates to "Is there anyone there?" or "Is anyone available?" in English.

Hello,

I would be cautious about saying "better to just go with EU 6 Blue?".

To the best of my knowledge, EU6 has not yet been decided.
So, if the Blue currently meets the EU6 standards, but the bureaucrats in Brussels come up with something else, you'll end up with a Blue with 143 horsepower, but it will only be classified as EU5.

I would say: Only buy what you need *right now*; everything else is like playing the lottery. You *might* get lucky, but nothing is guaranteed.

_I_ would buy the CBBB (170 CR), I even bought a BMR (170 PPD) icon_smile.gif.

Greetings.

The 4-cylinder CR engines have been very good so far. And they run much more smoothly than the PD engines.
I wouldn't recommend getting the new Euro6 engines (like the 3.0 TDI Blue...) with the SCR catalytic converter. It still needs to prove itself. Regardless, it's likely to cause additional problems because it's unnecessary and also prone to failure.
Solange für die Ostländer sogar noch Euro 3 Stinker gebaut werden. WI'm not sure what you're asking. Could you please rephrase your question?
Euro 6 models cannot save the world either. icon_smile.gif

I keep hearing and reading this over and over again.

My experience doesn't align with that.
I have heard and experienced both BMR (170 hp PPD) and CBBB (170 hp CR) engines directly in a Passat Variant and compared them.
NOT MUCH difference - the CR is quieter when idling - but I'm INSIDE and DRIVING!!!

This comparison is definitely applicable to BLS engines (105 hp, 1.9 PD DPF) - CBBB.
But then that's unfair, because comparing a G5 with a brand-new 3C is also not a fair comparison.
And BLS-BMR is already a world of difference.

You can even hear noticeable differences between the BMP and BMR engines (140 hp mPD DPF versus 170 hp PPD DPF in the Passat).
