hello...

Yesterday, I just checked the fuel injection timing, and it seems like it's incorrect.

According to the diagram, with a fuel temperature of 157 (whatever that means... probably not accurate), the injection start should be in the range of 20-60. Mine is at approximately 70.

Is the injection timing now too early or too late?
What are the implications of this?
What value should I set it to? Should it be closer to 60 or closer to 20?
I think one might be more economical, and the other might offer more performance... but I'm not entirely sure.

Hello,

I can't tell you off the top of my head whether the optimal time to start injecting is early or late.
However, it should be possible to detect a change in the injection timing ratio by rotating the pump and comparing the timing ratios at early/late start of injection (SOI) values.
The optimal value is the midpoint between the values. By deviating from the optimal value, you don't actually change the actual sensor values, but you only make it more difficult for the control unit to regulate the correct value.
If the pump is overtightened, adjusting the injection timing will no longer help, and the target values for the speed booster (SB) will no longer be reached.
Before you adjust your pump, take a look first:
- whether you used the correct engine code for the timing diagram.
- Whether the values can be properly adjusted during operation depends on the specific situation. It may not always be necessary to adjust the pump, unless your engine has poor starting behavior. During engine start, the injection timing adjustment of the EDC is not active; instead, the basic setting of the ESP is used.

Best regards, Rainer.

The correct diagram is the one for the AFN, which can also be found on your website.

Whether the correct values can be set while the system is running... hmm... I think so... Here's a small excerpt from the log file of measurement group 04...

or is the difference between the desired value and the actual value too large?

'A slightly more aggressive response in the lower RPM and load range, as well as improved revving characteristics, can be achieved by slightly advancing the injection timing... However, the injection timing can also be adjusted precisely using a diagnostic tool. This method has the advantage that the actual injection timing is known at all times. A description of this process is included in the error database.'

You can find this in the '10 cent tuning' section... I searched the error database because of this, but unfortunately, I can't find anything specific about it... or am I just missing something?

Well, how much better do you think it should be? icon_wink.gif

Please search for the keyword "adaptation" in the error database.

Okay, so I still have to adjust the fuel injection pump, right? The values aren't correct at idle, according to the diagram, or am I misunderstanding something?

I searched for adaptation information, and it told me which channel corresponds to what... but I still don't know what numbers I need to enter. I don't want to just experiment with it. Maybe someone has already done this and can tell me what ranges the numbers should be to achieve more 'oomph.' icon_smile.gif

Channel 1: Injection amount.
Channel 2: Idle speed.
Channel 3: Air mass.
Channel 4: Injection timing.
Channel 5: Starting amount.

That's all that could be found... icon_sad.gif

Hello,

As long as the actual value of the injection start can be properly adjusted to the target value during operation, there is no need to mess with the ESP.
The measurement of the injection start and comparison with the diagram must be performed in the basic settings mode of the control unit, during which the injection timing control is deactivated. In contrast, the injection timing control is active in your recorded measurement blocks, which is why the values are not comparable.

Now I finally understand icon_smile.gif Well... sometimes you just need some time icon_smile.gif.

'The engine starts very well, so the basic settings of the pump are working correctly. While the engine is running, the control unit adjusts the correct values, even though, according to the diagram, the pump is not quite in the optimal position... is that right?'

With the adaptations... well, I've also read this thread already... anyway... I guess I'll cautiously try to adjust the timing somehow to advance it.

Just one more quick question: To advance the injection timing for cylinder 4, do I need to increase or decrease the value?

Sure!

You know how it is... according to Murphy, the ESP or something similar will explode in the process icon_wink.gif. Or you end up making things worse.

I don't know that off the top of my head. Trial and error is the best way to learn, and as long as you're not using completely incorrect values, you can't really break anything.

Best regards, Rainer.
