AFN Conversion: Register the change.

Hello,

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding my engine. I once read that VW has approvals for such modifications. Since I also want to increase the engine's power, I want to get it registered. It should be obvious to everyone that a car with such a modification won't have 90 horsepower.
Has anyone ever done this before? I couldn't find anything about it in the search results.

The conversion from 1Z to AFN should be relatively straightforward, as the resulting configuration was originally built that way (for example, the AFN doesn't have larger brakes).

If you, as a hobbyist, are still tinkering with the engine (AFN) to extract 150 horsepower (which is achievable with just a different gearbox, without any other modifications), you obviously won't be able to get that registered.

Register your AFN and don't talk about anything else...

I understand that already. My concern was just about registering the AFN engine. That way, the difference in performance is smaller, and I have fewer problems justifying the car's performance.

Has anyone already had their engine registered?

I had a similar modification approved for my A3. The base engine in my A3 was an AGR with 90 horsepower and a wastegate turbocharger. I converted it to an AHF with 110 horsepower and a VTG turbocharger (see my profile for details), and everything was approved.
The effort involved should not be underestimated. Find a reliable mechanic you trust, because without documentation and confirmation from a VAG workshop regarding the proper modifications, the TÜV (German technical inspection authority) will not approve the changes.
It is also very important in this context to consider the gear ratios in each gear. You must prove (with a stamp from VAG) that the gear ratio, up to the wheel, does not deviate by more than 8% from that of an AFN Golf in any gear. This means that even the tire sizes are included in the calculation (if they are different).
It might also be very difficult without a copy of the vehicle registration document for an AFN Golf and the service data sticker, because this information cannot be obtained from the dealer (AKTE).

I significantly underestimated the administrative burden involved. Before you take any action, first find a competent contact person at the TÜV (German technical inspection authority) and, in a preliminary discussion, clarify what documentation they require.
Jumping into the cold water unprepared is sure to go wrong.

Within our circle of acquaintances, someone had a 'Pumpe-Düse' engine upgraded from 90 horsepower to 115 horsepower.

Dekra wanted: A declaration of conformity from VW, which specifies what needs to be changed. This includes the brakes, exhaust (due to the catalytic converter and potentially a better emissions test result), transmission, etc. In addition, a copy of the donor vehicle is required. All of this cost €122 and took less than an hour.

I am specifically looking for this declaration of non-objection.
Where can I get them?
I would never register that part if I didn't have this document, for the exact same reason why donalexo had so much trouble...

We requested this information through an inquiry to the parent company (in WOB) and by asking for a copy of the vehicle registration. It will then be sent by mail to your home address, along with all the necessary documents and conditions.

Does it cost anything? And should I call the main office directly, so they don't look at me like I'm from another planet...

Your local VAG dealer will do that for you. It shouldn't cost anything. At least, it shouldn't. ;D

Ideally, the friendly staff can print it out for you right there and then. I was there about a year ago to get the required documents and the "no objection" paperwork for a T4, specifically for increasing the gross vehicle weight to over 2.8 tons, and the nice man printed it out for me immediately.

I'll just ask and see what happens.
