Hello everyone,

Is there a way, for example using VAGCOM, to determine whether the engine control unit is configured for the longlife service interval by examining its coding? Or, can this be determined through parameters of other control units?

The question concerns my father's Passat (3BG, 02/01, 1.8T engine, the engine code was unreadable in the service booklet). The car now has 130,000 km on the odometer, and the service indicator has been showing a remaining distance of exactly 15,000 km for the last 10,000 km. It doesn't fall into the category of "extreme use" according to the post in the error database; it's driven relatively little (about 8,000 km per year), although there are some short trips, but it's also occasionally driven on longer trips to compensate.

The code QG1 is listed in the manual, as is the long-life oil according to the sticker. What's surprising is that, despite being long-life oil, the minimum interval of 15,000 kilometers is being indicated. The maximum duration of two years doesn't seem to be the trigger either, because the 15,000 kilometer mark is likely to be reached before that time, especially since, in that case, the mileage probably won't be decreasing.

My father called Volkswagen in Wolfsburg because the workshop couldn't provide any information, and they said that the vehicle probably wasn't properly configured for the longlife service and that he should have it checked and adjusted at a workshop.

There's a legitimate suspicion that they're just dismissing it without actually checking anything or even telling the customer, which is why I'm asking here. I'd like to run my own checks to see if everything is actually okay and if the €15,000 is justified, or if it's triggered by the two-year period.

What do you think?

Best regards,

Jan, who will probably be taking his TDI in for its first service this month as well.

Hello Jahn,

QG1 indicates long life.

"Vehicles 2000 > (Y >) with LongLife Service (PR number QG1)"
Maximum maintenance-free operation.
amounts to:
For vehicles with gasoline engines: maximum 30,000 km or maximum 2 years.
For vehicles with a 4-cylinder diesel engine: maximum 50,000 km or maximum 2 years.
For vehicles with a 6-cylinder diesel engine: maximum 35,000 km or maximum 2 years.
"Under extremely uneconomical driving conditions or extreme operating conditions, the shortest maintenance interval is 15,000 km or 1 year."

The encoding for the instrument cluster should be:

XXX1X (five-digit coding number, where the "1" indicates a flexible interval).

Channel 43: Value 00030.
Channel 44: Value 00730.
Channel 45: Value 00002.

Hi Michael,

"Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know!"

Are the channel numbers referring to the readable measurement channels, or the adaptation channels?

Should it actually be possible to read both values as "read-only," in such a way that the workshop cannot track or see them?

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello,

ich meinte die Adaptionskanäle. Sorry.
If you are using VAG-Com and have not entered a WSC code, the program operates in "stealth mode." This means that when values are changed, the previously found WSC code is simply written back.

Hello Jan,

Here's something else I found:

Golf IV / Passat B5

With extended maintenance intervals (EMI), reference number QG1.
Activating extended maintenance interval.

Vehicle identification numbers (VINs) affected.
WVW ZZZ 1JZ YP 161 129 to WVW ZZZ 1JZ YP 161 459.
WVW ZZZ 3BZ YP 093 434 to WVW ZZZ 3BZ YP 096 726.

For vehicles with extended maintenance intervals (EMI) within the affected vehicle identification number (VIN) ranges, there is a possibility that, due to a programming error, the extended maintenance interval function has not been activated. This means that the corresponding maintenance intervals are not flexible but are determined and displayed statically.
Tschüss

Hi Michael,

I'll try to find out the FgNr (vehicle identification number). However, I don't think this car falls under that category, because Y is a 2000 model year, while my parents' Passat is from 02/01, which is a 2001 model year, and that should be reflected in the Z. Also, I remember the place of manufacture being E, like Emden.

But still, thank you very much, we'll take a look at that.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello Jan,

Z doesn't apply to the model year!

MJ 2001 = 1
MJ 2002 = 2

You're right, people might mistake the "Z" for a space. But that doesn't change the basic meaning.

Jan.
