Vehicle: Fabia RS, 170 horsepower, 395 Nm torque, manufactured in 2003, mileage 57,000 km.
The tuning was only done since February, so it has about 7,000 km on it. Currently, the original software is reinstalled, resulting in 131 hp ("as requested by the workshop").
Past performance issues or failures: At 15,000 km, the air mass sensor; at 30,000 km, the air filter and diesel filter were replaced by the owner. The current problem has been resolved. At 35,000 km, the turbocharger intercooler pipe and hose needed replacement (the reason is unknown). At 50,000 km, a software chip tuning was performed. Now, at 57,000 km, new problems are starting.
Symptoms with chip: 1st-3rd gear acceleration normal/slightly weaker + gray smoke, multiple times the limp mode engaged during strong acceleration on the highway. In 3rd-4th gear, 6-10 seconds without any error codes being logged. After several attempts, finally an error code appeared: "boost pressure exceeded sporadically" despite reduced power output.
Workshop visit: Turbocharger replaced, vacuum system checked - "all covered under warranty."
My test drive did not reveal any significant improvement.
Second workshop visit, 30 minutes later: Replaced the vacuum regulator ("goodwill gesture").
The test drive with the mechanic did not reveal any significant improvement.
The mechanic suggested that the issue might be related to the chip software, as he had previously tested another Fabia RS from the same tuner that performed significantly better, without any smoke, power loss after prolonged full throttle runs, or limp mode.
3. workshop visit to the tuner: original software installed, lambda sensor measurement performed, boost pressure system checked for leaks, daytime running lights activated in 2 minutes as a thank you
Very happy.
symptoms original:
"During the test drive, gears 1-3 showed significantly less power. In 4th gear (highway mode), at full throttle for 6-10 seconds, there was a noticeable drop in performance, but without triggering any warning lights, and almost zero acceleration above 3800 RPM. The instantaneous fuel consumption dropped from 18 liters to 10 liters."
4. Workshop visit: Throttle valve and exhaust gas recirculation control valve will be replaced; parts have been ordered.
I'm slowly losing my mind! Help!!!!!!!
I have a feeling that this period of leniency and good fortune won't last much longer if they continue to exchange parts for €1,000 each.
Does anyone here understand what's going on?

Hi,
Here, at least, there's someone who understands.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.
Quote: | | The current consumption drops from 18 liters to 10 liters. |
Compliment for this unsolicited, but insightful observation .
This suggests a reduction in (boost pressure and) airflow, which could be caused by excessively high intake air temperature.
Then the performance would decrease all the more quickly and severely as the temperature outside increases.
I always say: LDA and VAGCOM are essential tools for anyone interested in tuning a TDI engine... Gruß Ulf

Thank you!!!!! Plausible explanation (' ').
Should I give the mechanic a tip, or should I let him continue happily replacing parts? From the beginning, I noticed this problem with fuel quantity and boost pressure; the performance repeatedly drops significantly, almost to zero acceleration in the higher gears. Often, the solution is so close, but you just can't figure it out. I'll let them keep replacing parts and hope that I end up with a completely overhauled engine, all new parts . So, they probably don't know how to properly use the diagnostic tool if they can't figure out the problem .

...which of course will not lead to any success as long as the cooling performance of the liquid coolant is not improved and it remains this hot.
Quote: | | I'll let them continue exchanging parts and hope that I end up with a completely refurbished engine, with all new parts. |
Nice tactic. But if something gets damaged during the exchange and the workshop claims it was already like that, things could backfire...
Quote: | | I actually noticed this problem with the fuel mixture and boost from the beginning, that the performance repeatedly drops significantly until there's almost no acceleration in the higher gears. |
So, since the car is new?
Quote: | Often the solution is so close, and you just can't figure it out. |
The solution only works if there is truly a clear dependence on the outside temperature!
Quote: | So, it seems they are not very good at handling the diagnostic device if they can't figure out the problem. |
"Simply adjusting the settings isn't enough here... you need to have a good understanding of why not only the actual LD (light intensity) is decreasing, but also the target LD value itself (!) - if my assumption is correct."
So, if it turns out that there is actually a design flaw (= the ASZ-Fabia drastically reduces the maximum power output in "normal" European climate conditions, even though all parts are okay), it would be embarrassing if a small workshop could prove this to the manufacturer with a simple test drive... You can already demonstrate the correlation with the outside temperature quite well.
During the day it's very hot, but at night it gets noticeably cooler. If necessary, you can help by dripping water from a bottle onto the cooling system at night (you might spray windshield washer fluid in front of the cooling system first).
Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation. Transparency, Teamwork

Exhaust gas recirculation valve replaced.
Changes: The car now responds better to the throttle, but it's still not great. Before, there was almost no turbo lag, except below 1500 RPM. Now, the boost kicks in later and isn't as explosive as before. "The half-shafts are happy."
"Power loss on the highway is still significant, but not as bad as before. It drops from 18.5 liters to 12 liters, which is a bit better than it used to be. Sigh. Driving a BMW 330d in Ägern is no longer what it once was; it's become more of a problem."
I mentioned to him that the charge air temperature was too high.
He just meant that the power loss is too significant, and it only appears after 5-10 seconds even after a full throttle run. Also, there shouldn't be any issues with the intercooler at 150 km/h, and the problem shouldn't occur during acceleration in 1st to 3rd gear. Furthermore, it shouldn't be present even after driving on winding roads for an extended period at speeds between 40-120 km/h.
A test run has now been conducted and the data has been logged. The data has been submitted, and I am now waiting for the analysis. My mechanic is currently on vacation, which will likely prolong the repair process since he is supposed to be the specialist for PD (presumably referring to a specific system or component).
The workshop foreman took it calmly and said they would soon have the problem under control, and that I shouldn't worry because it would be covered under warranty.
P.S.: A few parts are still missing, but then I can reset the kilometers to 0 . Skoda fabia rs 131 pd @170ps motornr.: ASZ

Okay, so at least the 5-10 second delay in power loss after sustained full throttle seems to fit quite well with the "warm-up delay" of the liquid cooling system, according to my logs.
The LLT (longitudinal load transfer) only increases significantly when driving at full throttle for an extended period; it drops very quickly when decelerating or coasting.
Given that it's difficult to drive on the underbody for more than a few seconds at a time when navigating hairpin turns, but you often roll uphill instead, I'm not surprised (assuming a reduction in ground clearance due to an excessively high load limit on the highway) that the engine pulls normally even in hairpin turns.

Who performed the log analysis? And to whom were the data sent for evaluation? Gruß Ulf

The mechanic said, "I'm sorry, I was working at the time."
Various measurement runs and tests were conducted, but none revealed the cause of the performance loss.
There are no errors in the control unit.
It's supposed to be an office or workshop where three specialists handle these types of cases and examine everything.
I'm not sure if this process happens internally at Skoda or where exactly the data is analyzed.
I only heard that they had already called Skoda.
It didn't really matter to me where it was exactly.
It could have been worse if the car wasn't working; then I would have had to put more pressure on things.
It would be unwise to switch workshops if this one is being generous with its warranty coverage and, from my impression, is making a real effort to resolve the issue. Skoda fabia rs 131 pd @170ps motornr.: ASZ

Well, if they had logged data specifically focusing on things like low-temperature performance and boost pressure, they might have noticed something -> see https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=88896#88896.Gruß Ulf

Vacation's over, and I'm calling the doctor right away.
According to him, field measurements apparently indicate that the system is functioning correctly, but I find that hard to believe.
The suspected cause is the fuel injector for cylinder 4, which is supposedly still within its tolerance range but performing poorly ("values are fluctuating significantly"). He mentioned something about fuel injection quantity correction.
The next appointment will be for replacing the PD element, and he will also replace the LLT sensor ("to address the LLT"). It's new, even if it doesn't make a difference.
I told the mechanic from the forum about this problem I'm having, and that it's a known issue with a specific cause. However, he didn't want to hear anything about it being related to excessive LLT (likely referring to "Longitudinal Load Transfer").
"I contacted the Skoda service department, and they said it's a PD element."
"Whatever! I ordered a VAG-COM Pro for OBD/OBD2/CAN bus and will check it myself. Another new toy. Hopefully, it will arrive this week." Skoda fabia rs 131 pd @170ps motornr.: ASZ

I think: because, as far as I know, there are no fixed maximum values for the Lower Limit of Temperature (LLT)... and how could there be, if the LLK (Lower Limit Control) isn't a regulated system and the logarithmic values shift in parallel with the outside temperature, e.g., at a 1:1 ratio?
Quote: | | The next appointment will be to replace the PD element, and he will also change the LLT sensor "to a new one," which is new even if it doesn't make a difference | .
That's probably how it will end up... but since the really hot days of 2006 will be over after the repair, you would have likely had about 11 months of peace with the old sensor anyway.
Quote: | I told the mechanic from the forum that this problem I'm having is known and what the cause is, but "he didn't want to hear anything about it being due to excessive LLT."
Contacted Skoda's service department, and they said it's a PD element issue. |
Logically: A diversionary tactic from the flawed LLK application in the Fabia RS (design flaw) . Gruß Ulf

I'm still not getting any peace and quiet, even with the moderate outside temperature, but now there's a new noise!
"While driving on the highway at approximately 150 km/h, the engine became extremely rough for 2-3 seconds and then returned to normal. It sounded like a motor brake engaging – a loud 'grrrrrrrrr'."
It's running smoothly again, without any noticeable issues, except for a slight performance drop.
The power loss is still present even at an outside temperature of 20 degrees Celsius on the highway. The tachometer continues to rise, but it takes a good 5 seconds for the needle to move from 3800 to 4300 RPM.
The problem hasn't subsided yet.
Currently, the power loss in 4th gear doesn't start until around 3700-3800 RPM, even though it should still be delivering full power at that point. If I repeat this a few times, it gets worse.
It's a good thing the mechanic did test drives up to 180 km/h, and the issue usually manifests around 160 km/h. He mentioned that the RS was close to its rev limiter during his tests. Regarding the growling noise, he suspects it might be a faulty "worse" pressure sensor (PD element). Skoda fabia rs 131 pd @170ps motornr.: ASZ

Typical of the LLT problem.
| It's good that the mechanic performed test drives up to 180 km/h, and the effect usually occurs around 160 km/h, roughly speaking. He mentioned that the RS was close to its rev limiter during his test drives. Quote: |
Okay, but why the emergency stop? Every genuine emergency stop has a specific reason, and that reason is recorded in the error memory.
However, the LLT emergency brake apparently isn't a fail-safe mechanism in that sense...
| the growling sound, it could be the "defective" PD element .
Growling noises from the PDE? Well, considering the forces already at play during normal operation, a significantly louder acoustic level would, in my opinion, lead to material failures within a short period of time }. Gruß Ulf

Regarding the "pd" element and emergency mode:
Without the chip: there were no emergency procedures whatsoever.
with chip: occasional exceeding of speed limits despite performance loss?!?!
The mechanic said that something wasn't right with the PD element and its quantity correction, which indicates a fault. The retrieved log data supports this.
According to the mechanic, the engine control unit reduces the overall power output if a common rail injector (PD element) is not working correctly or injecting too much fuel. There's a fault code indicating that the injection quantity for cylinder 4 is too high. While there was no limp-home mode activated, it appears to be operating near the threshold where it could trigger one.
There is no smoke coming from the exhaust, not even during full load changes.
Runs like an eco-friendly vehicle , I miss my 170 horsepower , 400 Nm .
Should I install the chip software? Then there will be a decent limp-home mode again during aggressive driving, "I suspect only the load overspeed regulation limit is occasionally exceeded despite reduced power." Skoda fabia rs 131 pd @170ps motornr.: ASZ
