The mass airflow sensor measures the air *before* the turbo – that is, the air entering the turbo, not the air actually consumed by the engine. If half of the air being drawn in (and measured) escapes through the hole instead of properly entering the engine, then logically, far too little air reaches the engine to completely burn the injected diesel fuel.
