Hello.
My friend has the following problem with his Passat TDI, manufactured in 2002. Before I take a look at it, I'd like to get some tips from you.
He had the rear brake pads replaced, but the warning light on the instrument cluster is still on. Does the warning light need to be reset using VAG COM? If not, what could be the problem? Or, what steps should be taken?
2. For the past few days, his Xenon headlights have stopped "initializing" properly. Is it possible to read the FSP (Fault Storage Period) of the Xenon control units using VAG-COM? Also, where is the OBD port located on the Passat?
Thank you for your answers.
Best regards,
Peter.

Hmm, on the front brake pads? There's a sensor in there too.
Secondly: Yes, it is diagnosable, and it's located either in the center console next to the handbrake lever (under a small cover) or under the steering wheel.

Hello.
Okay, thanks. No, the pads on the rear axle. Should the warning message disappear automatically after the replacement, or does it need to be reset?
Best regards,

There is only one indicator – it displays information for both the front and rear brakes (if a sensor is installed), so check the front pads. The sensor is located inside the brake pad.

Hi bindpe,
The BVA sensor is located on the front left side of the brake pad.
Maybe check the brake fluid level sometime.

Hello.
Thank you for the answers, but unfortunately, I'm a bit confused now.
According to my colleagues, the message that appears is something like "Replace rear brake pads" or similar. I haven't seen it myself yet.
Why should I then check the coatings of the VA components?
Best regards,

Okay, here's the translation:
"Again, in plain language and summarized."
Your friend is wrong; there is NO monitoring of the rear brake pads. The only monitoring system is a so-called "brake contact" located within the front brake pads.
Okay, check the brake pads FIRST.

(Regarding the Passat, there might also be a wear indicator on the front right.)

Hello, thank you for your answers.
I'll probably go visit my friend tomorrow.
Stupid question: What exactly is a "break contact"?
Does the wear indicator light turn off automatically after replacing the brake pads, or does the contact need to be replaced?
Best regards,

"Brechkontakt" refers to a wire embedded in the brake pad that is designed to wear through and make contact with a metal plate when the brake pad reaches its wear limit.
"That means: replace the pads -> error message gone."
Unless there's a broken wire in the wiring harness or a loose connection in the connector. But your friend will see that when he inspects the pads.

The contacts are inside the housing, and the lamp turns off as soon as the contacts are intact.

Hello.
Thank you for the quick response. Is there generally no wear indicator for the rear brake pads on the Passat 3BG?
Could you give me some advice about the xenon headlights? Are there any parts that tend to fail frequently, such as the servo motors, software, or sensors? Are the sensors for the adaptive headlight range control (ALWR) located on the front axle? Can they be checked?
Best regards,

No, only in models with the electric parking brake is the brake wear (on the rear axle) determined by measuring the "travel distance" of the pistons.
The headlight range adjustment is diagnosable. Check the error memory or perform a basic setting if there are no entries in the memory.
I don't know off the top of my head where the OBD socket is located on the 3BG model (I'm familiar with Audi models).
usually located under the steering wheel, at the height of the left knee, or near the ashtray, under a cover that can be easily clipped off.

The basic adjustment is only necessary for setting the headlights and doesn't really achieve much on its own.

Okay, I also wrote "if there's nothing in the error memory!" (so, a shot in the dark).
