Hello,

I installed the ABS/EDS system mentioned above in my Golf 2.

Unfortunately, I didn't pay close enough attention when selecting the parts.
I didn't realize until recently that there are differences between the Golf 3 and the Passat.

The control unit comes from a Golf 3, while the rest (wiring harness, engine) is from a Passat.
Both are from the year 1997.

Now the system is reporting 'Control unit incorrectly coded.'
This is because the control unit expects a coding bridge between contact 7 and contact 22.

Since the wiring harness is from a Passat, the bridge is located between pins 6 and 22.

And before I start disassembling or, even worse, destroying the connector, I wanted to ask if it's possible to reprogram the control unit using a 'login code' without the correct adapter cable.

I've temporarily connected pins 6 and 7, but it didn't work.

The current code is 03704 (Golf 3).

Re-encoding to 00000 is possible, but only with error messages.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to recode it to 04505 (Passat), and that is exactly my problem. I believe that if I could get it recoded to 04505, the error message would disappear.

CAN the connector be modified without causing damage?
If so, how?

Thank you in advance for any tips you may have.

best regards
sw

Hello,

I don't want to interrupt your enthusiasm, but I think it's extremely dangerous to install an ABS system in a car for which it wasn't designed and for which it can't be properly adjusted. From a physics perspective, the Golf 2 and Golf 3 are quite different vehicles... I wouldn't simply assume that the system would work in extreme situations (like a full stop in a slippery curve) in the same way as it would in a Golf 3 or a Passat.

Best regards,

Jan.

Hello,

I don't see any problems myself.

Quite the opposite, the ABS system that was originally installed in the Golf 2 was also used in the Passat (35i) and Corrado. It uses the same control unit and the same software. It can be swapped directly.

The ABS system in the Passat has been further developed. According to my sources, the improvements are not specific to the vehicle model, but rather relate to the control and speed of the system.

Ultimately, it's not ESP, but just an ABS system.

And also, the TÜV (German technical inspection agency) already registered that issue for a friend of mine, so PLEASE don't give me any more instructions.

best regards
