Hello,
"On my A3 8L from 7/1998, the rear wiper is currently malfunctioning. It sometimes wipes very slowly, exhibits erratic and jerky movements, and occasionally stops working altogether."
Before I start disassembling the tailgate trim or potentially damaging the relay (assuming there is one) in the electrical panel, I wanted to ask if there's a common, well-known issue that might be the cause.
I can't really imagine a broken cable in the connection between the tailgate and the roof, given the "constant wiping" symptom.
Best regards, Rainer.

Unfortunately, I don't know if the windshield wiper is the same for the Golf IV and the Audi A3. I can only comment on the rear wiper for the Golf IV. Sometimes, mine would also twitch and simply stop in the middle of the wiping area.
The interval wiper function is supposedly (although I haven't verified this myself) located within the wiper motor itself.
I consciously used the rear wiper more frequently, and lo and behold, it then started working normally again. Perhaps there was water ingress, and the water evaporated due to the more frequent use?
Unfortunately, I don't know, but the problem somehow resolved itself on my Golf IV.

"Thank you, the problem surprisingly resolved itself. As long as the error doesn't reappear, further investigation is pointless -> let's wait and see..."

Yes, exactly, that's what I meant. In my case, it also resolved itself (mysteriously). However, it's a very common problem, and it keeps popping up in various forums.

Hi everyone,
I have an A3, manufactured in 10/99... I had the same problem, and it eventually resolved itself!
Tobi.

... yesterday, the electronic circuit board in my rear wiper motor finally fried.
The cause was water ingress through the broken nozzle tube (which was evident by the rotating nozzle), which caused the circuit board and the entire mechanism to corrode severely.
The old engine has the part number 8L0 955 711 A.
The new, improved version of the part has the number 8L0 955 711 B and costs around 90 euros.
Regards, Rainer.
Note: As mentioned above, there are no more relays. The interval timer and wiper control circuit are now integrated into the electronic circuit board.
