Hello.

Does anyone know the exact differences between the 1Z and AFN engines?
What is the performance difference based on?

1. See /viewtopic.php?p=8260#8260

2. Use the search function!

3. Yes, I know the differences between the 1Z and the AFN engines. The engines and their components are completely different (turbocharger, ESP, EDC, etc.). The difference in performance is mainly due to a different engine concept. The 1Z has a wastegate turbocharger, while the AFN has a variable geometry turbocharger (VTG). The AFN also has a different fuel injection pump.

Hello didl,

The changes are:

modified intake manifold
modified injection profile
Fuel injectors with larger nozzles.
Variable geometry turbocharger.
reinforced piston
Dual-mass flywheel.
Generator free running.
Improved oil cooling.
alternative boost pressure control.
another control unit.

Hello.
Wolfgang.

Thank you!

Finally, a friendly and reasonable response!

Are these all the changes?

Were any other bearings installed?

Best regards,
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Didl' is a German word that means 'a small, round object.' It can be used to refer to a variety of things, such as a ball, a marble, or a button.

Here is an example of how the word 'Didl' might be used in a sentence:

'The child was playing with a Didl in the garden.'

It's up to you. If someone asks the question twice, it can quickly lead to misunderstandings. icon_smile.gif
Because the question about the AFN (Arbeitsfreie Nummer, a type of German phone number) is actually answered in the link under MeckisFaq.

Yes, other types of bearings have also been installed!

Are you seriously trying to turn a 1Z into an AFN?

Try to get a chassis with a good engine, and then completely replace the engine in your own car. Even if it's a lot of work.

Keep in mind that a new fuel injection pump already costs around 2000 euros (slightly cheaper from Bosch). By the way, the fuel injection lines are also different.

If you have a complete front axle from a butcher's truck, you can install it directly. The conversion will then take 4-6 hours, and you'll definitely pass the technical inspection. And you'll surely find a buyer for your old engine.

You can even reuse the engine wiring harness from a 1Z engine in an AFN engine without any modifications.

In the end, I paid an extra 1000 DM for the AFN.

Hi Varianti,

Unfortunately, the AFN engine wasn't available in the Audi 80 (B4). That means Didl has a slightly more complicated problem. He'll have to source the parts from the VAG parts catalog.

Hi.

That's exactly my problem. That's why I want to upgrade my 1Z.

I actually want to install a larger turbo (130hp pump-injector system, different injectors, S2 or RS2 intercooler, Gruppe A exhaust system, stronger bearings, etc.). I might also get a pump-injector transmission, but I'm not sure which one will fit yet.

Will my Audi 1z wiring harness at least fit the VW Afn engine?

Best regards, didl.

Depending on the ESP version (8-pin or 10-pin), that might actually be correct.

If the problem is only related to the ESP, then I'll just modify my old one; it's the same thing, right?

... unfortunately, not. The AFN pump has a completely different injection pattern and different maximum pressures (see Wolfgang's reply, syncro16).

However, it is easily possible to convert the wiring harness from 8 to 10 pins.

The AFN also doesn't have a dual-mass flywheel.

I'm saying that because I'm currently having trouble with the G60 flywheel and I was planning to buy one from AFN soon.
I don't know how it looks in AFN engines from A6 models produced between 2001 and mid-2001. But actually, shouldn't AFN just be AFN, period?

Please correct me if anything is wrong.

Hi Arne,

To the best of my knowledge, AFN has always had a ZMS.

It's also mentioned in the "Motorentechnische Zeitschrift" (a technical journal for engines) in the article about the introduction of the 110 hp TDI engine.

Hi Ulf icon_biggrin.gif,

Is everything okay, Roger?
Are you absolutely sure the AFN engine has a dual-mass flywheel (DMF)? I really don't think so. I still have the flywheel at home. It has a slight wobble. I also have a PDF document about the DMF. Should I take a picture of it? I went to VW, and they told me it's not a DMF either.

I actually wanted to make the G60 version lighter and bring it to the weight of the original TDI disc because it rattles like a jackhammer.

Regards,
arne

Hi Arne,

I haven't disassembled my tractor yet, but whenever the topic has come up, either here or elsewhere, it has been unanimously assumed that it has a dual-mass flywheel (DMS), partly to dampen the increased torque peaks compared to the single-mass version. And that magazine confirms this as well.

Of course, none of this is an absolute guarantee of accuracy...

Hi Arne,

Just for the sake of it.
What do you mean by that?
Quote:
... it rattles like a vibrating plate.
?

Could you describe how that feels for you?
What exactly does making things easier achieve?
Does the engine not rev up faster?

Greetings.
Thomas.
