Reverse Gear Sharan TDI Automatic Not Working

Hello,
We have the following vehicle:
VW Sharan 1.9 TDi 81kW AVG, manufactured in the year 2000, with a 4-speed automatic transmission (DNP - chassis code 099).

with the following problem:
The reverse gear is not being engaged on the transmission side. The gear selector switch is functioning correctly, and there are no error codes stored. Even when querying the actual values (using a Pocket PC with VAG COM), the system indicates that reverse gear is being engaged.
The Elsa system states that the cable linkage from the gear selector lever in the transmission moves a lever that electronically relays the reverse gear engagement to the hydraulic system.

My question: Should I open the transmission oil pan, remove the valve body, and attempt a repair, or should I just replace the entire transmission instead?

Disconnect the transmission control module or the corresponding fuse.

The transmission should operate in a fail-safe mode, meaning that gears 1, 3 (in position D), and R are controlled purely hydraulically.
These gears are mechanically engaged by the selector lever in the slider housing and then electronically disengaged via solenoid valves ("electrically N").

If a power failure occurs and the valves still don't open, you can try manually forcing them open (using a plastic hammer) to identify any blockages or to check the solenoid coils with a multimeter.

Check the cable tension for correct adjustment!

The peripherals should, of course, be in good condition (oil level, filter condition, etc.).
