VAGCOM label files?

Hello everyone.

The label file I downloaded from Auto-Intern did not include all the measurement groups for my AFN engine control unit, and it was only partially useful for "labeling" the data windows. Therefore, I modified it to suit my needs.

How are VAGCOM users doing with other engines? Have you/did you experience similar problems, or do you know of a source for (German!) labels that properly explain all the measurement groups and whose text fits perfectly into the VAGCOM screens?

Would you consider a collection of "optimized" label files to be useful, which ideally would offer the right settings for every TDI – if Rainer could create such a thing and was willing to do so?
The collection would naturally need to be populated by VAGCOM users of the forum, as a single person typically wouldn't have access to all engine versions needed to test the labels.

I'm sending you my number from the AFN. Since our service numbers are likely the same except for the last few digits, it might work for you too.
If necessary, open (Wordpad or a similar program) and rewrite the text.

Given the relatively limited response so far, I wonder if the function of label files is generally well-known among VAGCOM users.

Therefore, here are a few "just in case" tips.

The car provides only "raw" values in the measurement data blocks, which are not automatically self-explanatory.

Example Group 7 of the AFN:
Here, three temperature values from the sensors for fuel, coolant, and intake manifold are displayed. This allows you to quickly check if all three sensors are working correctly when the engine is cool.
If the three data fields display values such as 10.8°C, 30.4°C, and 10.4°C, it becomes clear that the "average" sensor is not functioning correctly.
But which of the three donors is it?

VAGCOM (as far as I know, from version 81 onwards) can access a corresponding label file during the diagnostic process, which allows the measurement groups and data windows to be "labeled".
In the example mentioned, a heading like "Temperature Sensor Comparison" could be displayed above four data windows labeled as follows: "Fuel - empty - Intake manifold - Water." This would immediately indicate that there is an issue with the intake manifold sensor.

For example, when logging boost pressure data using Group 11, it would immediately be clear which of the two pressure values represents the target value and which represents the actual value, without having to sift through huge lists to understand the meaning of the measured values.

The label files are stored in a folder named "Labels" within the VAGCOM directory and are sometimes included during download, depending on the source. However, they are often incomplete, or the file for your specific engine is completely missing, or it is only written in English...

When using the dialog function, VAGCOM accesses the file whose name matches the first 9 digits of the VAG part number, which is displayed in green when the connection is established. This applies not only to the engine but to all control units that support measurement blocks, such as ABS, etc.
If a file with the appropriate name is missing, VAGCOM may display guesses about the meaning of the data in the data windows – which can be unreliable and misleading.

The label files can be edited in plain text using programs like Wordpad; you can correct, add to, or rewrite them (e.g., from English to German), etc. The folder is not protected, meaning that missing or better files can be imported, and unnecessary files can be deleted, etc.

Sure, but everything looks great on my OBD scanner... I rarely use it on other cars.

Then you probably had more luck with your labels than I did (see my initial post), if you didn't have to rewrite or supplement them.

Perhaps poorly designed files available for download (like mine) are truly the exception...

My ALH is also showing everything perfectly.

If you mean "dialog operation" in the context of being docked.
"Labels" are only used in the dialogue, yes.

You can read and edit them in the "Labels" folder within the VAGCOM directory.
