Marine Diesel Conversions: SDI Systems

Hello, maybe my topic is a bit inappropriate, but I don't know what else to do.
I'm in the process of marinizing an SDi outboard motor, manufactured in 2004. I didn't realize that the fuel pump only runs with the engine control unit (ECU). Now that I'm planning to get an ECU, ignition switch, and electronic throttle, is it possible to reprogram the ECU? The goal is simply to make the engine run and display temperature, oil pressure, and RPM.
