doesn't seem to be the typical bearing failure. Do I need to...?
Have my front wheel bearings replaced by a friendly VAG partner.
or it could be something harmless.

Hi,
I think it's more likely that the brake pads are sticking slightly. Wheel bearings also make noise even when cold, and they can't be brought back to life with light braking :).
It would be advisable to have the wooden blocks removed and the brake caliper housings cleaned, or you can live with it until your next inspection is due.
Olli.
