Hello experts,
I'm new here and I hope someone can help me. This Saturday, I replaced the rear brake pads on my Octavia 1.9 TDI with 110 horsepower. During the test drive, I applied full brakes, and then it happened. I heard a noise in the engine compartment – a rattling sound, like plastic hitting a gear. Then, there was no power, the engine ran very unevenly, and there was a very loud knocking sound from the engine. I stopped in a nearby field, and it took a long time for the car to start. During the attempts to start it, the whole car shook. After it finally started, it made terrible noises and had no power, so I drove about 1 km home at approximately 40 km/h. The ADAC technician read the error codes and said there were 3 errors: 1. Low intake manifold pressure, 2. Faulty mass airflow sensor, and 3. Incorrect injection timing (too early/late).
He said that the timing belt probably slipped.
Towed to the workshop. They told me that the fuel injection pump, which was replaced just 15,000 km ago, is faulty again. How can that break while braking?
While the pump is still under warranty, the cost of removal and installation is, of course, significant. I have doubts whether it's actually the pump that's causing the problem.
Who can help me? Mit freundlichen Grüßen und bestem Dank im Voraus. schneibi

Is the pump broken, or has the timing belt jumped a tooth?
One has nothing to do with the other.
In the event of an EMERGENCY BRAKING situation where the engine is stalled, it's conceivable that the pump still has some rotational momentum, while the crankshaft is stationary. This could cause the pump to pull on the timing chain from the "slack" side. The tensioner, which is designed to give way, is located there. Theoretically, this could cause the timing chain to jump.
First, check the ZR (likely referring to a timing belt or similar component) – readjust it properly (timing and tension), and then see what the pump indicates.

It would also be interesting to know if the timing belt was replaced when the water pump was changed, and whether the belt tension was correct (is it still correct?). If not, that would be a problem.
dieselmartin's theory might still be supported.

Hello,
Yes, the timing belt was replaced at the same time because the previous workshop had apparently installed the wrong tensioner, which caused the belt to be worn down on the housing to about 2/3 of its original width. Mit freundlichen Grüßen und bestem Dank im Voraus. schneibi

What is the voltage reading *right now*?
Even if a tooth is broken off, it should still be properly tensioned, right?
Probably, the connection wasn't properly tightened during the change - but it will be difficult to prove.

The good service technician said that the timing, etc., had been checked, and that the tension of the timing belt was also correct. He also mentioned that an error message for the fuel injector control valve indicated a defect in the fuel injection pump.
I'm looking forward to it; the replacement pump is supposed to arrive and be installed tomorrow.
Last year, I obtained the pump from an external company (Selmann Motoren) and not directly through the VW workshop; they only installed it for me. Therefore, the company Selmann will carefully examine the pump and determine whether it is actually defective.
Unfortunately, the current workshop needs to be approached with caution; two years ago, they suggested replacing the turbocharger when I had a severe power loss. However, it turned out to be just the mass airflow sensor, which was diagnosed and fixed by another workshop. But I have a friend who works there, and I hope he won't let them rip me off. Mit freundlichen Grüßen und bestem Dank im Voraus. schneibi

Hello everyone who is interested,
It appears that the timing belt has indeed jumped a tooth. After replacing the fuel injection pump, it was discovered that the engine was still not running correctly and was making strange noises. Nothing was detected with a stethoscope, and it wasn't until the cylinder head was removed that it was seen that a piston had damaged a valve lifter. Apparently, the timing belt jumped a tooth due to a defect in the tensioner lever. Fortunately, the workshop had installed it just about 6 months ago, and through their efforts, Skoda is now covering the entire repair as consequential damage. This means I will be getting a new engine block!
I guess I'm lucky in a strange way.
Many thanks again for all the helpful information shared in this forum.
Best regards, schneibi. Mit freundlichen Grüßen und bestem Dank im Voraus. schneibi
