Hi,
The search did not yield a satisfactory result.
The Conti catalog for the 1Z engine lists two different ZR kits, depending on the engine number.
(CT 867 K3 and CT 945 K1)
In a thread here https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=7011&highlight=zahnriemen+1z, the difference between air mass flow meters and air volume flow meters was mentioned as an external distinguishing feature for these devices.
Now, the G3 only ever had a mass-produced knife, so the distinction wouldn't make sense for the Golf.
Another question:
What are your thoughts on the Gates vs. Conti debate?
- Are the contents of the kits the same (e.g., belts, tensioner pulley, idler pulley - or even more?)
- Can you tell me something about the quality?
- I'm leaning towards Conti based on my gut feeling, but I also got an offer for a Gates belt from a mechanic.
"Thank you."

Hi Martin,
During my search for a ZR a few years ago, I also noticed this difference depending on the engine type, but I don't remember the details anymore.
Based on my and other people's experiences in motorsports, I would recommend Conti because you have the assurance that the product will live up to its promised performance.
When is the timing belt supposed to be replaced?
Georg.

In my case (AHF), the idler pulley of the Conti kit started to deform after about 50,000 km.
Interestingly, the replacement roller was identical to the one I found at a generic parts store. Due to lack of time, I didn't have a chance to find a different roller, but I hope this one lasts at least 50,000 km. Anyway, all the rollers will be replaced during the next timing belt change.
Best regards, Rainer.

Is "Umlenkrolle" actually referring to this small part located between the cam and the pump?
The change is at the door.
According to the sticker, the first service was performed at 95,000 km, and I now have 183,000 km on the odometer.
Okay, just 2 millimeters to go, and it has to be perfect.

Yes. There's still a "large" component next to the water pump, and another guide/tensioning roller on the tensioner.
Best regards, Rainer.

My timing belt slipped and then started rubbing heavily against the tensioner roller. After a short time (I think about 3000 km), it was already 1 mm off, which is why I replaced it with one from VAG. Since then, there has been no more slippage. However, I kept the original tensioner roller.

Hi Rainer,
With the Conti recommendation, I limited myself to the ZR tires, not the complete kit.
Sorry, that was an incomplete statement.
I strongly believe that my supply will last a little longer.
Replaced at approximately 86,000 km, currently at 135,000 km. Everything was checked and adjusted during the serpentine belt replacement this Christmas, and everything was in good condition.
Since I may be resealing my ESP this summer, I would install a new timing belt kit at the same time, because if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right .
Georg.

@ Georg
AHU and voltage levels???
I think the tensioner simply slides onto the groove, and that's it?
Or did I misread something?
Don't scare me - my last attempt to change the timing belt in the 90s (on a Golf 2 JP) ended with a broken camshaft , and then I had everything done at VW anyway.

@ Rainer
The water pump (WaPu) in the 1Z engine is driven by the ribbed belt, which is brand new.
I can only think of the following as being involved in the ZR case:
- KW
- Intermediate shaft
- Tension roller
- Camshaft
- Deflection roller
- ESP

How only on a notch?
I tightened the tensioner myself. Was I doing something wrong?
Martin, don't follow AHU .
In my opinion, the tension rollers are different on the 1Z and AHU engines.
Now you've confused me .
Georg.

However, 1Z and AHU are always mentioned in the same column, so they should be treated as identical.
I meant figure G.

Now I understand which notch you're referring to. Thank you, I'm relieved.
While 1Z and AHU are treated identically, the tension rollers are still different, as you know.
Georg.

HAE?
How can the tensioner pulleys be different if I receive set X for both the 1Z and the AHU engines?
My inquiry to "a reliable source" revealed:
1Z 028 109 243 F
Also, for all other cases as well (i.e., ALE, AFN).
The belt is the same as well.
Where do you "suspect" the difference lies, and how did you arrive at that conclusion?

But if they look different, they can't possibly have the same number!

AH
YES! (That's a joyful exclamation!)
Thank you, Georg, because when searching with the "1Z" part number, you will receive *both* components, depending on the engine number listed in the Conti catalog.
So, there really is a 1Z engine with the "2-finger roller" camshaft, which are the older ones, and a 1Z engine with the "AHU-like" camshaft, but probably not in the Golf 3, because "the reliable source" confirmed the identity of the "old" 1Z for the G3, and that "old" 1Z likely has the 182 Nm output from the Audi 80.
Then the difference between air mass sensors and flow meters could really make a difference, and again, the problem arises because of VW's "mistake" of labeling two different engines (202 Nm and 182 Nm) with the same "1Z" designation.
