Hello,

I own a Golf 3 facelift convertible (manufactured in 2000). Unfortunately, it seems there's damage to the transmission, as the 5th gear is no longer usable. I'm now looking for a new transmission for the car.

According to VW, my car was only delivered with the transmission identified by the code DSF. And because I've experienced that VW Beetles can sometimes be a bit quirky when it comes to parts and parts that might fit, I wanted to ask if anyone could tell me if I can only use the DSF transmission, or if I could potentially use other transmissions as well (please don't mention transmissions that would require major modifications). It would be great if there were other compatible options.

If anyone happens to have something suitable they'd like to get rid of, I'd also be interested.

The DSF was also installed in the Golf IV during the same period.
With a bit of luck, the other TDI transmissions that were available at that time in the GIV...
"They were installed, and they fit. Possibly even the EGS, which was also used in Seat and Skoda vehicles."

So, I seem to recall seeing that the DSF was also installed in the Golf 4, but I can't find it in the list I have icon_sad.gif.

How would the DSG transmission perform? Would it be compatible, or could it handle the power of the AFN engine?

Perhaps it's enough to just shift to the 5th gear? That shouldn't be a problem with this type of transmission.

Arne.

Of course, there is still hope that a repair might be possible.

"However, both I and the car are currently abroad, and it's unfortunately not possible to simply open the transmission and take a look. I don't need the car here, but I will need it in Germany. Therefore, the repair time should be as short as possible."

Is the current gearbox repairable, or specifically the 5th gear? If so, we will definitely do that. However, if it's not possible to fix it, we would need a different gearbox. That's why I'm already searching for a suitable one. Now we can take our time and search without being under pressure icon_wink.gif. Therefore, I'm also asking what alternatives are available...

What's the problem you're having with the 5th gear?

You can usually manage that without having to remove the transmission.

Lift the car, remove the (metal) cover on the left side of the transmission (using 5 screws), and you will see the 5th gear.

Best regards,
Germa

P.S. If you need a 5th gear, just let me know!
