Hey everyone,

After experiencing the same issue as many other owners of AFB (2.5L V6 Passat 1999) where the ESP control unit failed, I replaced it this weekend. It's actually not that difficult and can be easily done with the right tools.

Okay, the ESP is installed. Everything has been checked. The VAG-COM tool no longer reports any errors, neither from the engine control unit nor from the CAN gateway (as with the old ESP).

Unfortunately, it still won't start icon_eek.gif.
I also ventilated the ESP as requested by VW, using the vacuum pump. However, it behaves like the old ESP, just without any error messages in the log.

Does anyone have any other ideas? Because I want to sell the Passat as soon as possible, and I already have some interested buyers, but they want a vehicle with icon_cool.gif.
Gruß

If you are 100% sure that the pump is working correctly, then there is probably still air in the system. Try cranking the engine with slightly loosened fitting nuts on three injectors, and you should see if anything comes out. If it does, the engine will start. If not, then something else might be the problem... perhaps the immobilizer?

Hmm. Actually, I'm pretty sure the pump is working. As I said, it's not showing any errors...

Air in the pump... hmm, I've tried everything. I also loosened the union nuts. Some air still came out then, but I don't think it does anymore now.

Is it normal for the liquid to not flow continuously from the pipes?

My friend suggested it might be the air valve (located just before the intake manifold).

If it were the air flap, you can easily test this by simply disconnecting the hose and setting the flap to the "open" position.
If the cover nuts are loose and you activate the starter, it should spray properly; otherwise, there's no pressure.

Many people have told me to "really go for it," but how do you define that?

It's leaking, but not a lot – not enough to fill the entire engine compartment (so not 2 liters per second), but I'd say about 40 milliliters per pipe per cycle.

I'm going to try adjusting the air flap tonight.

icon_biggrin.gif Ha ihr werdets nich glauben. Aber ich sitz in Meinem Passat und lass gerade das Kühlwasser warm werden um die ESP einzustellen. HE'S RUNNING!!!

It was actually relatively simple, but you have to figure it out first. The fuel filter was clogged. No diesel was getting through. I put in a new filter, and there you go: bleeding the system finally made sense icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif.

Thank you again to everyone who helped icon_cool.gif. mserge already knows icon_cool.gif.
