Can I install...? (followed by the specific part or modification you're asking about) on my Audi 100 C4 TDI with a 2.5L 5-cylinder engine (AAT)?
Can the 'Glühstift' auxiliary heater be retrofitted?

Later on, it was also available in the A6 C4.

I always thought it was controlled by the engine control unit (ECU).

Hello,

Given the current cold temperatures, I would also like to have an auxiliary heater. Is it possible to install one in a Golf III from 1994 with engine code 1Z without major problems? Has anyone done this before?

Thank you and best regards from this cold weather.

Kusi.

Hi Kusi,

The G3 1Z model from 1994 should already include the preheating function.
I once bought a used 1Z engine from 1994 that already had the auxiliary heater installed.
You can identify it like this: Open the hood, stand in front of the car. On the right side of the cylinder head, you'll find a flange from which a rubber hose, about 3 cm thick, runs to the spray bar (to the heat exchanger in the car). Three glow plugs are screwed into this flange, which additionally heat the water that flows to the heating system (only when the engine is cold and not when many electrical consumers are turned on).

Regards,

Eike.

Hi Dirk,

I'm not sure if it's possible to retrofit the glow plug heater.

BUT you can definitely install an immersion heater from either Calix or Waeco. The part from Waeco is called 'Warm-Up.' There's an article about the Calix product on the left; take a look.
It can be installed by yourself, but the Bosch service team can also do it.
Of course, a power outlet nearby is required.
I've had this thing in the AAT since yesterday. However, you have to preheat it for quite a long time; the 'big-block' icon_lol.gif just doesn't want to get warm!
This morning's 20 minutes were already quite good; tomorrow I will try to do over 30.

Hello,

I checked under the hood today: The flange and hoses are present; however, unfortunately, there are no other connections that would allow glow plugs to be installed. This is probably because I bought it in early 1994, specifically February. Is it possible to retrofit glow plugs?

Regards,

Kusi.

Hello,

The part number for the flange with auxiliary heating is 028 121 145 B and should cost approximately 20 EUR. The corresponding glow plug (3 pieces are needed) is the N103 021 023 and costs about 29 EUR per piece.
Don't forget the sealing ring with part number 037 121 687 either.
The numbers are from a 1995 Golf MJ 1Z and should fit.
Tschüss

Hello Dirk,

Coming soon.
Let's finish the golf course first.

For controlling the system, you can either build something yourself (using relays, switches, etc.) or purchase a ready-made switch, such as the 191 911 261 B (which costs approximately 70 EUR). This switch then needs to be connected to the battery, glow plugs, and the engine control unit (ECU). If the ECU does not support this directly, you can create a temperature-dependent circuit that connects the two wires with 12V+, providing both low and high heating power. Alternatively, you can use two regular switches...

"Hey Kusi, if you're interested, I can also find the connector housings and other small parts."
Tschüss

Hello Dirk,

To the best of my knowledge, in an A6 with AAT (Audi Active Therm Management), there is a supplementary heating element (Z35) installed on the heat exchanger, rather than glow plug heating.
Retrofitting this is somewhat complicated and also very expensive (approximately 440 euros just for the heating element).

@ Kusi

I have a 1994 model (built in March) and it has glow plugs for the coolant.

@ Michael II

I once found an aluminum part at a junkyard where three glow plugs were screwed in. According to the part number, it came from an Audi. This thing can simply be installed into a water hose. I'll see if I can find the picture.

Hello,

There are Audis that come with glow plug preheating (e.g., the A3).
As far as I know, the solution is different only for the A6.

Hello Dirk,

The part number is a bit difficult to read. Could you please post it separately?

@ Dirk

I checked my car again and didn't see anything. Maybe I can't see properly in this cold weather, or maybe I was looking in the wrong place. Since you apparently have a digital camera, would it be possible to take a picture of the relevant part? That would be really great.

@ Michael II

Thank you for the information. Are these parts prone to frequent repairs, or could I potentially find used parts at a junkyard? I lack some basic electronic knowledge for building things myself. While I can manage soldering, I'm not familiar with circuit design...
If I obtain the parts, whether used or new, can I simply connect them to the engine control unit by plugging one connector into another?
How can I find out if the motor control unit supports this circuit?

Thank you very much for your efforts.

Regards,

Kusi.

@ Michael II

I went back to take another look, and I examined the flange more closely, and lo and behold, I found them: the three glow plugs. It seems that the cold somehow affected my eyes icon_eek.gif. Since my car takes a very long time to warm up, is there a way to test these glow plugs? Perhaps in a similar way to how spark plugs are tested with a light bulb?

Regards,

Kusi.
