Passat 3BG Towing Hitch doesn't fit?

I bought a tow hitch supposedly for a VW Passat 3BG (very cheap), but now it needs to fit into the frame from the back. The coupling must be mounted with 3 bolts on each side.

The frame measures approximately 7*7 cm (per side), but the coupling is only 4*4 cm. Is there a missing adapter, or is this incorrect? That would be quite a mess.


Who knows what? I know the description is very vague. The Passat is from 2003.
