Hello!

Two weeks ago, I had a new transmission installed in my Golf TDI 115PS AJM, manufactured in May 2001, with 40,000 km on it. The old transmission was malfunctioning and difficult to shift in certain gears (which is why it was replaced under warranty).

The problem now is:
A brand new transmission was installed for me free of charge. What did I find?

'When in 3rd, 5th, or 6th gear, the transmission makes a whirring noise while in neutral. The noise disappears when I disengage the clutch and reappears when I engage it.'
It is best heard at an engine speed of 1500 RPM.

Is there a mechanical fault here? Or was a mistake possibly made at the workshop?

Thank you for your help/tips/answers.

Hello,

Here's what VAG has to say about it:

"With the 02M 6-speed transmission, 1.9L TDI engine, 85/110 kW, transmission noises (howling/whining) occur in gears 2 through 6, both during acceleration and deceleration."

Affected ICD codes: AJM / ARL.
Affected GKB systems: DRW / EFF.

Cause.
Unfavorable tolerances in the manufacturing process / gearbox.
Unfavorable conditions for dental procedures.

Argumentation towards customers:
InsIn this case, any modifications to the transmission are not permitted!

Due to the aforementioned reasons, extensive modifications were made to the transmissions to minimize these issues.
If I were in your position, I would insist on a replacement, as it is clear that an older transmission was installed that does not meet the current standards.
Tschüss

Thank you for the answer!

I've noticed something else.

When starting in first gear with the steering wheel turned almost fully (either left or right), there's a slight rubbing sound/vibration that can be felt.

Definitely not normal. It's also been happening since the transmission was replaced.

Thank you.

Hi, kann auch die Servolenkung sein. Wenn es auch im Leerlauf auftritt, ziemlich sicher. That's normal.

Best regards, Rainer.

The noise is only audible when starting.

Hi,
In older Polos, it wasn't allowed to move the vehicle if the drive shafts were removed. If you did, the wheel bearings would usually fail shortly after, because the drive shaft provided a preload on them. I don't know how things are with modern cars. Perhaps the 'older gearbox' isn't 100% compatible either.
I wouldn't accept that, though.
Perhaps it's best to wait until something breaks down completely and then take it to the workshop. If they try to fix something now, there might already be some initial damage that won't become apparent until later, after the warranty has expired.

Regards,

Eike.

@Razor

'I'm experiencing the exact same problem (transmission noises) with my 150hp TDI, first registered in 10/02. My workshop said it's due to the thin transmission oil. The noises have been present since the beginning, and nothing has changed after 9,000 km.'
Should I insist on a replacement while it's still under warranty?

Hello Steffen,

What gear ratio code do you have?

I only hear this howling noise in 5th gear, when the car is under load. (Probably because the car is 50%...)
(Used primarily on highways, experiences the most wear and tear.)
It is also best heard at approximately 1500 rpm.
Question: Can this noise be ignored, or should/must a repair be done?
Execute immediately?

Best regards.
Peter.

edit: Transmission, 184,000 km.

Hello everyone,

The thing about transmissions is that it's always a tricky issue.
I'm experiencing the same problem with my new transmission (AVF with FRK).
It was replaced with a new one as a gesture of goodwill back then. The new transmission.
It makes a slight whining or humming noise, somewhere between 120 and 140 km/h, in the 5th and 6th gears.
Habe es schon mehrfach bemängelt. Even with...
From various retailers. Unfortunately, without success.

I have now driven over 20,000 km with this transmission.
Including a vacation trip. -> No problems encountered.

The background noise hasn't changed. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.
This is why some transmissions are louder, while others are quieter.

Best regards,
