Hello,
3BG, AVF engine, year 2001, 190,000 km.
The following problem:
More and more often, the turn signal relay rattles wildly (even though the vehicle isn't actually blinking).
That's annoying. Replacing it with a new relay only provided temporary relief.
It's worst when it's cold and damp. If you drive for a long time with the heater on, it gradually stops.
I've already tried spraying wax protectant on the pins of the flasher relay to keep moisture away, but the effect was only temporary.
Does anyone know about this problem and can help?
Best regards,
Bernhard.

Bye.

The rattling sound occurs after you've blinked once, but not immediately after.
A slight wobble in the steering column lever cannot cause the rattling sound; instead, it usually starts like this:
Just turn it on sometime.
I've already soldered a flyback diode to the relay coil, though.
Impact.

Based on my experience with Audis, it's usually (90% of the time) the relay in the hazard light switch.
If not, the problem is usually resolved by replacing the turn signal lever.

The rattling sound often comes from a faulty hazard light switch.

Thanks for the information. The problem has been resolved after replacing the steering column switch.
Inside the steering column lever, a conductive strip is located on a flat ribbon cable, which sharply curves around...
It's bent at a corner and eventually breaks off.
Bernhard.

Hello,
Ha, now I'm experiencing that interesting phenomenon too. What exactly is it? Is it the steering column switch, or just the turn signal switch? I'm leaning towards the latter.
Does anyone have any reliable information?

Okay, I understand. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Proof can be found here:
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.
The A3, Octavia, Golf IV, and Passat models share the same steering column switches, which have the same quality issue with the sliding contact.

Yes, I know, we even had that issue with our V8. It was more about the fact that the steering column switches are identical, meaning they have the same part number.

Here's my tip: If the left lever with the GRA (likely referring to a control panel) is defective, you can buy the one from a Skoda Superb. It has a simple hourglass symbol on it, but it's cheaper and compatible.

"Not entirely correct; the conductor track is for the cruise control buttons... the turn signal uses solid copper contact strips, as you can see in the link above and in my detailed photos of the disassembled lever."
