Hello everyone icon_smile.gif.

Yesterday I diagnosed a Fabia 1. What could be the cause of this error...? Could it really be the catalytic converter? I don't quite understand what "Bank 1" means... this is a 3-cylinder engine. Normally, only the lambda sensors monitor the system at this point, or is there another sensor on the catalytic converter?
Apparently, repairing it isn't cost-effective... (according to the workshop).

Hello,

The 3-cylinder engine has only 'one bank,' meaning all three cylinders are arranged side by side.

I'm not sure if anything other than the KAT could be responsible for the error message.

Best regards, Rainer.

Does the engine consume (a lot of) oil?

Hi!

According to my information, the engine doesn't consume excessive oil, and it has never been overfilled with that "black gold." It has covered over 192,000 kilometers and looks quite "honest"... almost as if someone spilled some oil on it at some point. However, it could also be that the valve cover gasket is leaking slightly.

Which sensor is this "error" actually registered by? Perhaps the measurement value is corrupted?

P0420 is an OBD2 standard error code that indicates a problem with the catalytic converter or a leak between the engine and the catalytic converter.

The entire system is normally monitored using two lambda sensors: one before and one after the catalytic converter.

There's plenty of reading material here: http://de.lmgtfy.com/?q=p0420

This error is reported by the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter. It measures the effectiveness of the catalytic converter.
It's possible that your flexible exhaust pipe is defective. Does the car sound different coming from the exhaust than usual (a bit louder and more muffled)?

A relative of mine had a similar issue with the engine's memory. It happened in a Kia Sorento. In his case, the engine would sputter and stall when it was under heavy load. Eventually, it turned out that the oxygen sensor (lambda probe) was defective.

May I chime in on this old topic?

The broken flex pipe is located behind the second oxygen sensor (lambda sensor) on my car.
Could that still be related to the error?

Thank you very much and best regards.
Stefan.
