Hello,

'In my old Golf IV (which my girlfriend is now driving), there's an annoying rattling sound coming from the center console. I suspect it's coming from the small storage box located under the radio (which is often mounted above the radio).' I temporarily removed the radio and the speaker, and swapped them around to see if it made a difference.
If both of those things are removed, there's still just a very slight rattling sound, but it's not completely gone.
Otherwise, the rattling is constantly present, regardless of whether the radio is in the upper or lower compartment.
Does anyone know about this? What can be done about that?

Check the radio to see if the rubber cover for the mounting screw is still attached to the back of the device.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'rubber coating'... it's more like a small, roughly 3-4 cm long 'peg' made of soft plastic that slides the radio into its mounting bracket from the back.
But I've noticed that it doesn't click into place, it just slides in. Maybe I should wrap something soft around it for insulation, like foam or something. Thank you for the tip!

Yes, exactly that rubber stopper; there's one around that part on my radio.
The 'Serienmäßig' earbuds already have a fairly thick layer of tape wrapped around them.

Okay, so I've tried all sorts of things, like those small, self-adhesive foam strips from the craft store, duct tape, and tons of Teflon tape. While it has eliminated the worst of the rattling, it's not completely gone yet.
Does anyone have any other ideas? The 'rattling' sound probably doesn't come from the radio or the storage compartment, but rather from the bracket or possibly the climate control system (manual climate).

I'm not entirely convinced about climate regulation.
Why don't you take the cup holder out for testing?
To do this, fully open the drawer of the cup holder.
There are 2 on the left and right sides of the drawer. Noses the.
They need to be carefully pushed in with a screwdriver.

It's frustrating... with each part I remove, the rattling decreases, for example, that loud rattling when hitting potholes is now gone. But that annoying, albeit quiet, and practically constant rattling is still there. Could you perhaps tell me how to remove the climate control unit? For manual air conditioning systems.
I'm almost ready to start filling everything in that area with PU foam. icon_evil.gif

Finally, the cause of the rattling noise has been eliminated!
It was because the section of the center console, including the ashtray and gear lever, makes contact with the dashboard, and this transmits vibrations.
VW even had a troubleshooting solution for this in its manual, although it was listed as 'noises from the glove compartment.' Now, they simply installed a piece of soundproofing material between the two parts (the center console and the dashboard), and it's perfectly quiet! Well, almost... but now I'm hearing noises from somewhere else *g*.
Apparently, this problem also occurs in newer Volkswagen Golf models, but it's only addressed when necessary. It probably doesn't happen with all cars, and it likely only occurs with vehicles that have higher mileage.
