Hi,

Our Golf (BLS) has the pleasant characteristic of being able to start up extremely quickly.
You only need to tap the key once, and it starts.

That gave me the idea, during my recent trips around the city, to simply turn off the engine at red lights.

If I do this regularly, will it significantly strain or overload the system in the long run?
Do vehicles with start-stop technology have more robust components?

Thank you.
Martin.

Hm.

Okay. Since I usually drive the Passat and my wife drives the Golf, that probably won't work.
The Passat takes too long to start, then always makes that annoying noise from the xenon headlights, and is overly sensitive to releasing the clutch when starting.

My attempts to log the difference in startup time were not really successful.

Except that the Passat, with 55,000 km, shows a significantly greater voltage drop (8.2 volts) compared to the Golf with 121,000 km (10.26 volts).

Have you measured the voltage drop between the battery and the motor, or also to the starter?

No, not yet. Because I need some help with that.
One starts, the other measures.

But thank you for the tip.

Here are my attempts at cold starting:
Cooling water: 7-9 degrees Celsius.
Lights off, interior lights off, clutch depressed, preheating complete (Passat 2s, Golf 1.61 s).

Interesting, because I also often turn off the engine - however, only after a standstill of more than 5 seconds, and not during every short stop in traffic, as new start-stop automatic vehicles probably do.

Do you know any more details about the modified connecting rod bearings (specifically, how they were made compatible with start-stop systems), and which engines this applies to?

I found a list.
The connecting rods are here, but they are not included icon_exclaim.gif icon_question.gif.

I'm also a manual start-stopper and would be interested in learning more about that.

My information relates to:

Felt battery.
reinforced starter motor
various software and sensors to automatically control it.

What's really interesting is the battery's improved cycle life and the reinforced starter motor.

Because I think my battery is getting weak...

Hello Martin, Valeo is developing a starter-alternator block with an electronic control unit, and it will operate using the KRR system!
Regarding the battery, I'm thinking of my spiral battery, which has a starting current of 900A and a capacity of 45Ah. Even my old 5-cylinder AAB engine responded almost twice as quickly and revved up faster.
"That's what I would choose." Just needs a different bracket.
Do you have a clamp meter? If so, could you measure the current draw of the Passat to see if it's consuming more power than the Golf, which might be draining the battery?

Hello everyone!

Please check the idle voltage of the vehicle's electrical system on the Passat icon_exclaim.gif before starting.

...below 12.00 volts indicates either a discharged battery or a fault. A. (=sulfated, with high internal resistance!)... *smart-alecky comment*

@MartinViewing profile: Martin
Have you ever tried replacing the battery with a new or better one and then repeating the test exactly as described above?

Best regards from Munich!

Bear,

Not yet.

The Golf has a 61 Ah battery (2 years old, 121,000 km).
The Passat has a 70 Ah battery (2.5 years old, 55,000 km).

I'm just going to swap them out – even though the Passat battery might not fit in the Golf.

The Golf mostly drove on highways, while the Passat was used in a more varied environment with a lot of city driving and experienced two mishaps (once it ran out of fuel, and once it had a faulty jump start).

If that were the actual voltage at the idle terminal, it definitely wouldn't start a TDI engine.
So, either she's still experiencing residual effects (e.g., from the standby glow, even though the winding mechanism in the AI is already disengaged), or there's some kind of adjustment factor or similar issue somewhere in the data flow that's causing the problem.

Ulf.

(1) The voltage is correct - I just compared the motor control unit and voltmeter directly to the battery again.

(2)
The log says the following before the start:

01010000 = No preheating.
and
Supply voltage: 11.97 V

Attached are the logs. I logged a warm start issue with the Passat while driving in the evening, specifically at a traffic light.
