Reset Car Radio Code: How to Fix It

Hi,
Radio Alpha, Golf 3.
After replacing the battery, the CODE appeared, and then I pressed TA and TP simultaneously, as usual.
"The number '1000' appears, but it's not possible to input it using the 1st, 3rd, and 4th buttons; however, it is possible using the 2nd button."
Is the radio broken? It was working before.
Can I bet 1000 in a different way?

Even though it doesn't really help with solving the problem, Alpha and Beta radios sometimes go for just one euro at the 3-2-1 auction house.

I wouldn't waste much time worrying about that...

No, the code for VW car radios always depends on the serial number and is calculated accordingly.

Thank you, Bertil. I've tried experimenting with two input buttons, and they allowed me to switch through one or two digits, but not all of them. It's only a single attempt saved, so it should be possible. My suspicion that the EEPROM is the issue seems plausible, because "back in the day," it was possible to switch between different stations using station buttons.
I also tried using VDCS before, but I couldn't connect - although that might be intentional when the "CODE" message appears.
