Hello everyone,

While changing the spark plugs yesterday, I noticed some oil leaking from my EGR valve.
Vehicle details: Volkswagen Golf IV, engine code AXR, oil leak reduced using original VW gasket, mileage 83,000 km, manufactured in 2004.
Description of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve outlet: On top of the EGR valve is the pressure sensor. Facing forward, in the direction of travel, there is a hole with a diameter of approximately 4 mm located below the pressure sensor within the EGR valve housing.
Description of the oil amount: A thin film of oil has formed on the bottom. I estimate the total amount, including the wetting of the underlying parts, to be 2-3 drops.

Although it's only a small amount of oil, I can't quite figure out how it got there. I haven't noticed any other problems yet, but maybe this is the beginning of something?
Could it be that the diaphragm in the EGR valve is leaking, causing a slight loss of boost pressure during combustion and drawing some oil from the intake manifold?
What is the purpose of this drilling?

'Edit: I found another picture here where you can see the drilling underneath the pressure sensor as a black dot (I hope it's okay to share this image; if not, I will remove the link). '

Almost everyone with this type of AGR valve experiences a slight oil leak, which is harmless and not a defect! The oil comes from the crankcase ventilation system in very small amounts, which is normal! After cleaning, it should remain dry for several thousand kilometers.

As mentioned earlier, air leakage from the breather hole for the membrane valve is normal after some time. Typically, the valves remain sealed for around 100,000 km, after which they may start to leak. If this bothers someone, they need to replace the AGR (exhaust gas recirculation) unit.

Hi,

Ri'Is that correct?'

As long as icon_wink.gif not a huge amount comes out, yes.
