Hello,

In my 2006 Ibiza 6L, the G85 receives voltage through both constant power and ignition.

I haven't yet measured the standby current using the "Dauerplus" fuse, but...

"That will likely be a few milliamperes."

"Does the ESP system cause any problems if I disconnect the battery for several weeks at a time to prevent it from being unnecessarily discharged?"

So, if I were to connect the constant positive terminal to the ignition instead (to protect the battery), what problems might arise?
Gruß Ulf

Sure, here's the translation:

"Are there a lot of errors occurring during the process of starting, igniting, shutting off, restarting, and steering?"

"Ulf, since your beloved Ibi is sitting in the garage with unnecessary comfort features, and after seeing your cold start video, is there a 230V outlet available? If so, you could use a battery maintainer like a CTEK to keep the battery healthy! I have something similar in my T3 when it's stored for the winter. Its two batteries have lasted through eight years now!"

Before I regularly go through this process (and incur unnecessary electricity costs), I would rather just swap one fuse.

Therefore, my question here is about the consequences icon_wink.gif.

Just try it out! Unfortunately, I don't know what the effects might be.

There's a good reason for that.
These are piezoelectric gyroscopic sensors. They have the unpleasant property of not performing well during "cold starts," which results in inaccurate readings.
If you can live with the fact that your ESP might not work correctly for a while, then there's nothing wrong with your plan. However, it is extremely dangerous in all cases.

The quiescent current for these components is in the microampere range. If this drains your battery too quickly, then it's probably time to replace it anyway.

Ah, finally we're getting to the hard technical background icon_biggrin.gif.

Ah yes.
Does the term " cold starts" not refer to "" only affecting "" precision, but not lifespan?

However, it is extremely dangerous in all cases

because, for example, the ESP could mistakenly detect a skidding vehicle due to premature activation (cold sensors) and then react accordingly?

How long (approximately) do the sensors take to start providing accurate data after a cold start?

The quiescent current for the components is in the µA range.

. . . without any additional electronics being powered via the main power supply?
I'll definitely measure the amount of current flowing through the "Duration Plus" wire.

Hello Ulf,

I find it very amusing what you are interested in here and how you want to implement something. Without even considering the consequences this intervention will have for you and possibly innocent road users.

I'm sorry, but any interference with safety-critical components is where I draw the line.

Besides the subsequent cancellation of the vehicle registration ('ABE'), there's also the loss of insurance coverage. Given that this situation involves a risk to the general public combined with gross negligence, it already constitutes a criminal offense.

Despite that, here are some answers:

How long (roughly) do the sensors take to start providing accurate data after a cold start?

Depending on the environmental conditions, up to 60 minutes.

Does the term 'cold starts' not refer only to precision, but not to lifespan?

Both...and.

Sure, here's the translation:

'One more question:'
Does your car have an alarm system?
If so, think about what the sensors might potentially be used for icon_wink.gif.

Ulf doesn't have that, or rather, it refers to all the vehicle parts that need to be removed.

My Golf has been sitting in the underground garage all winter, with temperatures below freezing, for exactly 22 nights and 23 days without being used. It even has an alarm system. The battery is still the original one from 07/2002, and what can I say, it started up perfectly without any problems... not as fresh as on the first day, of course, but it was definitely enough to get it going. Unfortunately, I couldn't connect a trickle charger because there's no power outlet available, and I missed the opportunity to remove the battery.
So, it should definitely be possible, even with a relatively new car, to leave it unattended for three weeks without compromising any essential systems.

Or is this a preparation for your ultimate victory, which now also includes the expansion of ESP and ABS, because the mechanics involved certainly weigh 10 kg, the wiring harness is not insignificant, and then there are the sensors icon_rolleyes.gif.

It's good that you point out the background information. icon_wink.gif

"By the way, I find the purely technical implications of this to be quite bizarre."
For example, if jump-starting successfully revives a deeply discharged battery, the gyroscope sensors also undergo a cold start. If you then immediately drive off (as is common), the car would essentially be a rolling time bomb for up to an hour with a disabled Battery Management System (BMS).
However, the Ibiza owner's manual does not mention anything about this under either the "Jump Start" or "ESP" sections...

No, it does not have a remote control system.

I don't believe it's a good idea to take on unpredictable risks for the sake of a minimal (and likely immeasurable) increase in battery life, and I advise all readers against such modifications.

....
If you were to immediately drive off as usual, the car would then be a ticking time bomb for a maximum of one hour with an expired inspection sticker.

Without a valid ABE (approval document). This is accepted because...

But the Ibiza owner's manual doesn't mention anything like that, neither under 'Jump Start' nor under 'ESP.'

... you don't need a jump start every day.

Furthermore, the documentation (DFU) should state that a workshop must check the system for error entries.

It's worth noting that, depending on the specific ESP system and software used, it is even possible that the ESP warning light will remain illuminated for some time after such an incident (until the next restart).

DFU = IFU = User Manual.

'Direction for use' = 'Instructions for use' = 'Operating instructions' icon_wink.gif

Without the G85 component, the servo will also fail.

At least the emech. in the G5 and 3C models do that.
"Ehydo" is likely available in Ibiza, but possibly also elsewhere.
