Hi,

I have a Sharan 7M, manufactured in 2006, in the workshop, and the rear wiper isn't working. It works for washing, but not for wiping. It doesn't work directly, nor does it work when the front wipers are turned on, or when the car is put in reverse. This means I can probably rule out the stalk switch. I can also rule out a broken wire in the hinge of the tailgate, because there's no voltage reaching the wiring harness at the bottom.

Okay, there are a few relays there, but I don't know which one is for the rear wiper. I could just pull one out and see if it stops working, but it's not working anyway, and our two Sharans (company cars) are currently out, so I can't even test it.

It would be great if someone could help me with this, or knows what other options might be available.

Greetings.
John.

Hi,

The 7M no longer has a relay for the rear wiper.

The windshield wiper has four contacts:
1 - Mass
2 - Connects to the switch, grounds when the rear wiper is active.
3 - Connect to switch, 12V when rear wash pump is activated.
4 - Connect to terminal X with a 15A fuse (S20).

The windshield washer pump is connected between pins 2 and 3. Depending on whether the spray should be directed to the front or rear, pin 2 is either positive (+) or negative (-), and pin 3 is the opposite. The power supply for the pump is provided through a separate 10A fuse (S233).

Does the wiper move back and forth during the washing process, or is it just spraying water?

Ich gehe von letzterem aus. In this case:
X-Kontakt still needs to be functional, otherwise many other things won't work either. The only remaining possibilities are the wiring of X-Kontakt via fuse 20 (including the fuse itself) and the cable leading to the windshield wipers.

There's a brown, five-pin connector located behind the right D-pillar. Check if there are still 12V from the S20 present at pin 1. That will tell you whether the problem is located in the front or the rear.

Have fun!
Sure, here's the translation:

"Guste" is a German word that means "gust" or "gust of wind." It can also be used to describe a sudden burst of something, such as laughter or anger.

I've experienced this issue multiple times with Passat B3/B3G and Golf IV models.
Either the MOSFET on the power amplifier had burned out (-> replaced with a larger one).
or the vibration damper in the engine was worn out (it can be disassembled quite easily and
(and can then be soldered).

Best regards,

Here's the solution:

Windshield wiper linkage seized, resulting in excessive current draw from the motor.
While disassembling it, I also discovered that the power amplifier for the wiper motor in the control unit is faulty (showing a short circuit). This is likely a consequence of the increased current draw.

That's why the washing process occurred, even though the wiper didn't move.
