Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts,

My AXR is giving me gray hairs again. When I was changing the winter tires for summer tires yesterday, I encountered the following situation:

and
http://mitglied.lycos.de/kraftbertil/Bilder/Daempfer_links.JPG

Both rear shock absorbers need oiling!!! How can this happen in a car with only 29,429 km?

Hi,
It's getting to the point where you can really say it's a Monday car. Have fun with the friendly service on Monday icon_sad.gif.
Unfortunately, I had to notice the same thing today with my Koni coilover suspension. It's only one damper in the front, but after about 13,000 km, that's quite surprising. Here's a cheer for Koni's lifetime warranty icon_biggrin.gif.

Best regards, Andy.

My condolences, Bertil. They really are producing bigger and bigger pieces of junk these days!

Does anyone know if the supplied parts are the same at all production locations?

Best regards, Rainer.

Are they not...? They sometimes take strange paths...

Some (newer) products have even involved their suppliers in the process, and some parts are shipped from France to the Czech Republic (like my Garrett turbocharger, for example).

I can check with our service people next week; they are well-regarded both at the automotive plants and among their suppliers icon_smile.gif.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

... not necessarily. Each manufacturing site is responsible for its own material procurement. As long as the parts are approved by the Quality Department, the factories can install whatever they want. However, the problem lies in the approval process itself. Often, only a specific part is approved.

Oh oh! I think I might have done something wrong! On March 25th, I'm picking up my 'new' Passat (manufactured in 2001). Hopefully, all those 'childhood diseases' have been fixed by now, guaranteed! Otherwise, I think I'll have a breakdown!!!!!!!! icon_redface.gif

Considering that the Golf has had five years to mature... but the Passat is also getting a bit older, if you don't count the facelift. Won't a new one be out soon as well?

Hello fellow enthusiasts,

Yesterday, I got my car back. Now, the ESP is not working! icon_smile.gif The handling on the road is completely different compared to before.

But now, here's a great story:
The shock absorber test report indicates a total weight of 1897kg (presumably including the driver). This results in a payload of only 3kg with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 1900kg! Either this car was loaded to its maximum payload for the damper test, or the scale is incorrect. If neither of these is true, then I have serious problems! icon_sad.gif

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'Hi,'
In all the shock absorber tests I've had done so far, the car has been tested without any load. If this is different here, that would be something new.

Best regards, Andy.

Hi,
Okay, here's the translation:

'Just a question. Could it be that the item wasn't actually weighed on a scale at all, and the weight was simply entered manually (and of course, incorrectly)?'
Does your friendly neighbor really have a scale in their yard?
Best regards, Andy.

Hi Andy,

der Stoßdämpferprüfstand ist die Waage! Es wird jede einzelne Radlast gemessen und dann aufsummiert. Sibefore here: http://www.maha.de/de/ps_stossdaempferpruefstand_fahrwerkstester_sa2_fwt1.asp

The following results were displayed on the testing platform:
VL 553 kg
VR 518 kg
HL 427 kg
HR 399kg

=1897 kg

My measurement, which I just took on my own bicycle weighing scale ( http://www.reich-web.com/index.asp?id=66 ):
GVWR: 435 kg
VR 400 kg
HL 320 kg
HR 305kg

=1460 kg. Sounds a bit better (tare weight according to the documents is 1395 kg)!

Hello Bertil!

The shock absorber test stand is the scale! Each individual wheel load is measured and then summed up.

Hi,
Well, that was unknown to me. The printouts from the shock absorber testing machine, which I visit occasionally, don't show any entries regarding wheel load. At least, it hasn't come to my attention before. Although the device is located at a TÜV station near us, it's probably not without reason that it's jokingly called 'countryside TÜV.' That means you won't find the latest performance there icon_sad.gif.
But where does this huge discrepancy come from? I can't imagine that the vehicles are loaded up to their maximum permissible gross weight. Can you find out more about that?

Best regards,
Andy
