Hi!

I recently started driving a Seat Toledo III (5P), manufactured in 2007, with 85,000 km on the odometer, and it has a 140PD 2.0 TDI pump-injector engine (BKD).

Before that, I had a 2001 Toledo 1M with the 1.9 TDI 110hp (ASV) engine, which had its head gasket fail for the second time recently at 230,000 km (the first time it happened at 150,000 km).

While the "old" car practically didn't consume any oil (at most 1 liter between oil changes), the "new" car (after 2500 km) already needed a little over half a liter added.

Is oil consumption of this magnitude normal for common rail diesel engines?

I'm not aware of the specific type of oil currently in the vehicle, only that an oil change was performed at 76,000 km.

GPS (were feasible).

I also have a liter of ELF "Solaris LLX 5W-30" oil, which, according to the label, meets the VW 505.01 standard. Can I use this without any problems to top up the oil level until the next oil change in the "new" car, or should I use something else instead?

And which oil would you recommend for the oil change?

Hello there.
The specified oil should be a 507.00, low SAPS oil, suitable for engines with a DPF, and should also meet the 505.01 specification. This would be the oil that VW would expect to be used in that engine.
Ein halber Liter auf 2.500 km is schon was! Das wären 5 L in einer kurzen WIV. Quite expensive.

It should fit.

Hi... I just noticed that a thin "crust" (the surface looks like charcoal) has formed inside the exhaust pipe.

"I'm a bit surprised because, unlike my previous car (a 1.9 TDI ASV), which has been emitting a noticeable amount of black smoke from the exhaust, especially during acceleration around 100 km/h or 2000 rpm, and even after cold starts, I've never seen any black smoke coming from my "new" TDI. Plus, it has a diesel particulate filter, so where is all this crust supposed to be coming from?"

Could this be related to oil consumption, and if so, what would it indicate?

The filter consumes a lot – but not everything. What remains that can still pass through the filter (i.e., that fits through due to its particle size) will eventually be released. Depending on the surface roughness and potentially due to static charges, a significant amount of material can accumulate on the pipes.

First of all: The BKD engine doesn't have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as standard. Only the 8V versions have it. The 16V AZV and BKD engines don't have one either. If there is one, it's likely an aftermarket addition. Since the engine, by design, would produce a green sticker for the windshield, I would remove that thing first.

My BKD engine consumes maybe 50-100ml of oil per 1000km. Take a look inside the AGR valve to see how it looks, because it's possible that the oil is getting into the system through the crankcase ventilation system.

It's possible that this filter, if one even exists, is so restrictive that the back pressure becomes too high, causing the pump to force oil past it. However, I doubt this is the case, because if that were happening, the pump would likely fail quickly.

If an aftermarket filter is installed, it is usually removed and registered. For troubleshooting, it can certainly be removed, but this is not permanently permissible. icon_wink.gif However, aftermarket filters typically do not clog, or only clog very late, with unfavorable usage patterns of the vehicle.

"@Hutfahrer: If the small canister has been in place for a while, it's quite possible. Just look at the size difference between the retrofitted DPF for the 1K (Golf V) and the 1J (Golf IV) – it's quite surprising! And as soon as there's a defect and the system is producing excessive soot, that small "wonder box" will quickly become full, while the larger one has more capacity."
