Hello everyone,

"I had an incident with the KW bolt on my '96 Golf. Could this happen with all model years of the AFN engine? Or do later production years (in my case, a '99 Seat Ibiza with the AFN engine) have a stronger KW bolt and are therefore protected against this issue?"

Best regards from Tobi.

Hi.

No, only the later models without the intermediate shaft received an M14 screw.
Installing a free-running system on the LiMa helps to reduce the stress on the connection.
Otherwise, the only solution is to regularly check and replace the screw and wheel.

Best regards, Michael.

.....which, however, doesn't seem to be a 100% solution, as I know of an ALH engine where the screw came loose at 255,000 km icon_rolleyes.gif.

.

"I think that, since the PD engine uses the same type of screw connection and there are many of this type of engine in use, we can consider these issues as isolated cases. This is quite different from the problems encountered with the older engines!"

"I have seen damage to the crankshaft bolt on many engines from the older 1.6 and 1.9 generations, and I have even repaired some of them. However, I haven't encountered any problems with the crankshaft bolts on the newer engines."

PD elements integrated into the timing chain and worn camshafts are more likely to be found in such cases.

Hmm, shouldn't my alternator already have a freewheel?

Does it have icon_biggrin.gif? If it's defective or stuck, the belt vibrates quite a bit.
