Passat V6 TDI Won't Start: Error Code 1044

I'm slowly starting to despair.

My Passat V6 TDI (engine code: AKN, transmission code: ETZ, chassis number: 3BZYE402169, first registration: 06/2000) had a problem with the fuel injection pump some time ago, which I have since replaced. After painstakingly bleeding the fuel system and installing a new fuel pump in the tank, the engine ran both when stationary and while driving in our large courtyard. To properly recharge the battery and check for any error codes, I let the car run for about 1 hour. When I then gave it some gas to drive into the garage, it stalled and hasn't started since.

You could try loosening a check nut on the injectors during the starting attempt to see if any fuel is being injected.
Based on the described symptoms, I suspect there's an air leak in the fuel system.
