Hi.

I had an idea for my Passat 3C.

The 1.6-liter gasoline engine and the Bluemotion models do NOT have air ducts that cool the front brakes.
In the winter, cooling is more like showering with saltwater, so it's not very pleasant.

TeI want to buy something.

The BM has smooth wheel housings - On the 1.6 model, the channels are only "clipped" in place.

You can buy these earplugs... Spending 6 euros per side might be worth it to try and contain the saltwater.

Or what?

Hi,
Doesn't the shower actually come from the water that's being swirled up by the wheel itself?

Hi,
I would use it during the period when salt is being spread. You probably only need this extra cooling during the summer, especially on long downhill stretches.

The fine spray of road moisture kicked up by the tires is enough to keep the wheels and brakes wet. The salt that settles there binds the moisture, ensuring that it remains there for a long time, allowing the salt to exert its corrosive effect.

It would be beneficial to regularly rinse away salt deposits, and to clean and re-lubricate the vulnerable sliding surfaces of brake calipers and pads at regular intervals with the appropriate lubricant. In my opinion, the rear axle brakes are more susceptible to damage from winter conditions than the front axle brakes due to their lower usage.

Okay.
Then I also need a set of winter alloy wheels.

Thanks to the 5-spoke design, I can more easily access the brakes for cleaning.

...or steel rims with closed wheel covers. They let less spray through and perhaps also less of the salty brine. icon_wink.gif

Whether there's a little more or a little less gout, salt is still salt.

Gout? icon_eek.gif Absolutely not! icon_wink.gif Clean the sliding surfaces of saddles and coverings before winter, apply a thick layer of paste for preservation, and if they start to become difficult to move, clean them again and repeat the process.

Hello,
While not related to brake ventilation for the 3C model, here's information about the radiator grille cover for the 3BG model:
I'm going to test: a) Aerodynamic advantages, yes/no, similar to Bluemotion; b) Reduction of salt accumulation on the radiator and engine compartment; and c) Faster engine warm-up due to short trips, currently with the radiator fins blocked by a 35 mm heating pipe insulation (see T5 forum: Tuning, a different approach). a) is further enhanced by a grille closed off on the passenger side, next to the fog light (where the second SMIC is located in the V6 TDI, which I don't have).
"So far, there are no noticeable aerodynamic or fuel efficiency benefits, despite the fantastic reports in the T5 forum about advantages of -0.5 L/100 km. Even at the current ambient temperature of around 10°C and on long highway drives (140-160 km/h), my coolant temperature never exceeds 89°C and usually stays between 87-88°C (measured via OBD). Apparently, the ventilation of the radiator provided by the VW emblem and the grille below the license plate is sufficient. The operating temperature might be reached faster in freezing conditions, which will be tested under appropriate ambient temperatures."
Conclusion regarding brakes and ventilation: I don't think Martin's brakes will overheat!

It's too tight for me on the left side as well.

Back then, when the Bluemotion grid cost 7 EUR and not 24 EUR icon_wink.gif.
Does the transmission also not overheat?

Bad weather --- I'll just put those things in tomorrow morning icon_smile.gif.

Are you installing the infrared temperature measurement system for the brake discs at the same time?

Hi Martin!
Since my A3 8PA also experiences significant braking problems in wet or salty conditions, I would be very interested in the results of your experiment.

What surprises me is that shouldn't our ABS/ESP systems also integrate the "dry braking" function during wiper operation? How/where can I check for this function in the ESP control unit?

Best regards,
Dirk.

So, all the 3C models have the brake disc wipers.
To verify, I would:

- Make it rain.
- to drive with the windshield wipers running.
- DO NOT brake.
- log the brake pressure.
-> He needs to go up periodically.

Unfortunately, it hadn't been salty at all for us yet - even the first, large tour with the "earplugs" was quite dry and rather fuel-consuming icon_twisted.gif.
