Engine Replacement: Find Engines Compatible with ATJ.

Hello!

My friend's car has a problem: the ATJ engine in his Passat 3B (built in 1999) has a hole, and the connecting rod is broken.

Now I'm looking for a replacement engine. Which engines can I install that are plug-and-play?

My local engine rebuilder has an AWX engine lying around (I think it's from Audi). He said that, except for the injectors, it's compatible with the ATJ engine. I can't say for sure whether I absolutely need a new cylinder head yet, because the engine is still complete, and it's currently a bit too cold in our workshop to tinker around.

I hope you can give me some information about which other engines might be compatible.

Difference - Nozzles, turbochargers, pistons, etc.

Without replacing the MSTG, only the ATJ P&P will fit there.

Okay, I don't want to install a new MSTG (main switching and distribution unit) because that would require repinning and rerouting cables, and I really don't feel like doing that.

What if I take the fuselage of the AWX and the head of the ATJ (if it's still in good condition)? Then, wouldn't we be able to leave the electrical system untouched, or am I mistaken?

I would certainly be interested.
I need to take a look at my friend's engine head now to see if the head or valves have been damaged.
If the timing belt breaks, you can also forget about the engine head.

But please inquire about those details as well (including mileage and year of manufacture), and let me know what you find out.

If necessary, you can attach the PD elements and charger from the old engine to the AWX; the effort is quite manageable. And you don't have to remove any ZK components either.

The compression ratio also differs between the ATJ and AWX models.

That's what I meant. It will probably run fine like this, but I would still prefer a genuine ATJ engine.

Is this an ATJ engine, with serial number 29970?
It was installed in a Passat Variant all-wheel drive vehicle, manufactured in the year 2000.
The car has a mileage of 185,000 km. The car belongs to my neighbor, and it has always been well-maintained, including regular oil changes with the correct type of oil.
There were absolutely no problems until I changed the timing belt...

The engine is currently stored in a container at my place, like when it was removed, and has been there for about 1.5 years.
The bare metal parts are already a bit rusty, for example where the water pump is located. However, that shouldn't be a problem.

If you're interested, I can try to figure it out the day after tomorrow.
and check if the cylinder heads are rusted, and see if the engine still turns over.
and what damage he sustained from the crack in the rear differential. Otherwise, we'll just see if everything else is okay.

The used engine that I installed cost 900 euros.
Okay, assuming the pistons and cylinders are all fine, and everything else is okay too...
I think that around 200 euros would be a reasonable price for just the engine block without the cylinder head.
The risk is inherent.
and I also don't have any experience with what happens after a timing chain rupture in that engine.
I wonder how long it will actually last...

Shipping will be an additional cost, we'll have to see about that.

Thank you for your offer, but the risk is too high for my friend with your engine. Also, would the AJM engine also fit in place of the ATJ? What's the difference between those two engines?
